The Digital Coast is a collaborative effort of organizations committed to providing data and information, tools, and training resources to help address timely coastal issues - including land use, coastal conservation, hazards, marine spatial planning, and climate change. NOAA's Coastal Services Center is maintaining the Digital Coast website which provides access to all the resources being developed and contributed by academic institutions, public and private sector entities. This curated collection of coastal and ocean data and tools are directed at decision makers, practitioners, and technicians.

Vulnerability and Consequences Adaptation Planning Scenarios (VCAPS) is a facilitated, scenario-building process that enables users to construct and display causal pathways that link climate stressors, vulnerabilities, and consequences with appropriate local adaptation options. The Social and Environmental Research Institute (SERI) has developed this participatory mediated modeling process with the initial goal of examining the support VCAPS can offer climate change adaptation planning by local decision makers from coastal communities.

The City of Ventura, California, has had ongoing erosion at Surfer's Point, a popular surfing spot adjacent to the mouth of the Ventura River. A California State Park bike path along the shoreline and an adjacent County Fairground parking lot have also experienced frequent damage from erosion. Local stakeholders collectively approved a plan to move the parking lot, pedestrian path, and bike path away from the tideline, instead of building a seawall or adding other armoring, which was projected to permanently damage the beach and surf break.

A supplement to Adapting to Climate Change: A Planning Guide for State Coastal Managers, this report is intended to be used as a companion to the 2010 planning guide. It provides more specificity on climate trends and potential climate change impacts and consequences affecting the Great Lakes coastal region, and it is designed to aid policy makers, coastal managers, and planning professionals as they begin to address the impacts of climate change. This Great Lakes supplemental report provides updated data and information on climate phenomena and the potential climate change impacts and consequences for Great Lakes coastal areas.

Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) was directed by SB 964 in 2011 to develop and implement a general permit regulation that authorizes and encourages the use of living shorelines as the preferred alternative for stabilizing tidal shorelines. In 2015 and again in 2017 the VMRC established permitting regulations pursuant to SB 964. The Living Shoreline Group 1 (2015) and 2 (2017) General Permits for Certain Shoreline Treatments are regulations which streamline the permitting process incentivizing property owners to utilize a living shoreline approach to manage shoreline erosion, and promote tidal wetland vegetation to restore or enhance ecosystem services.

The California Ocean Protection Act (COPA) was signed into law in 2004 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, establishing the California Ocean Protection Trust Fund and the Ocean Protection Council (OPC). As amended in 2011, COPA is also a tool in assisting city governments to plan for climate change adaptation and sea level rise.

Saco Bay is home to Maine’s longest stretch of contiguous sandy beaches, its largest expanse of coastal wetlands, and includes the coastal communities of Scarborough, Old Orchard Beach, Saco, and Biddeford. From the Saco Bay Sea Level Adaptation Working Group (SLAWG), this report provides the results and analysis of projected sea level rise inundation scenarios and land and real estate economic impacts for the Bay. This project was developed with the assistance of the Maine Department of Conservation, Maine Geological Survey (MGS) and the Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission.

The California King Tides Initiative encourages members of the public to document (photograph) the highest seasonal tides (or king tides) that occur along the state’s coast. Seasonal high tide events can provide a preview of what might be experienced regularly in the future as a result of rising sea levels. King tide events are an opportunity to share what you see in your community with others.

This report details progress made in the Climate Ready Estuaries (CRE) program during 2010. CRE, in partnership with the National Estuaries Program (NEP), is helping estuaries assess their vulnerability to climate change impacts, engage stakeholders and develop monitoring and adaptation plans.
