This Policy Tool Kit was developed by the Center for Island Climate Adaptation and Policy (“ICAP”) and the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program. The Tool Kit surveys state adaptation plans, federal efforts, and other key sources to identify and discuss important land use policy tools for Hawai‘i, and suggests how these policies can be used by state and local governments to avoid or lessen the impacts of sea-level rise and related coastal hazards.

This article, by two researchers of the United Nations University (UNU) Institute for Advanced Studies, summarizes a working paper in which they examine questions of long-term survival for Atoll Island States. These countries could become uninhabitable or submerged in the course of the next century due to sea-level rise and coastal erosion, exacerbated by stronger tropical cyclones. Prominent vulnerable island nations include Kiribati, Tuvalu, the Marshall Islands and the Maldives.

The Delaware Coastal Programs Section of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is leading a multi-year Sea Level Rise Initiative to help assess, prepare for and minimize the potential impacts of sea level rise. The Sea Level Rise Initiative Project Compendium was released in September 2011, which provides an inventory of all of Delaware Coastal Programs' projects related to sea level rise. It is intended to help increase collaboration between agencies, reduce redundancy and overlap in projects relating to sea level rise and to relay information about new data, information and tools.

Produced by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, this report includes a risk assessment and a detailed vulnerability assessment addressing sea level rise impacts to both natural and man-made systems on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. The Climate Change Adaptation Inventory is a compilation of climate adaptation activities and research initiatives taking place at the federal, state, and local levels in communities adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico. The inventory focuses specifically on those projects and efforts that address climate change or sea level rise. Research activities captured by the inventory are limited to those projects that have applications to coastal communities, particularly planning and development, land management, and socioeconomic initiatives.

Developed through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Climate Ready Estuaries program, this primer identifies approaches for inland migration of beaches and wetlands as sea level rises due to climate change. The report describes how these measures can be used by state and local governments in cases where traditional protective measures such as the construction of dikes, seawalls, and other structures may prove economically or environmentally unsustainable.
