Organization
Since its establishment in 1968, Louisiana Sea Grant College Program (LSG) has worked to promote stewardship of the state’s coastal resources through a combination of research, education and outreach programs critical to the cultural, economic and environmental health of Louisiana’s coastal zone. LSG’s strategic initiatives address four issues identified as especially pertinent to state, regional and national needs: healthy coastal ecosystems, sustainable coastal development, safe and sustainable seafood and hazard resilience in coastal communities.

Maine Sea Grant is based at the University of Maine and sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the State of Maine. In partnership with University of Maine Cooperative Extension, members of the Marine Extension Team work on issues of concern to Maine's coastal communities. The Maine Sea Grant's areas of focus are healthy coastal ecosystems, sustainable coastal development, safe and sustainable seafood supply, and hazard resiliency in coastal communities.

The Maryland Chesapeake & Coastal Program (CCP), administered by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, is a partnership among local, regional and state agencies. The CCP also collaborates with many private organizations, such as local land trusts and economic development groups. This partnership has helped the state to reduce the environmental impacts of coastal development, resolve conflicts between competing coastal uses, and provide assistance to local governments in coastal planning and resource protection.

Maryland Sea Grant is administered by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the State of Maryland, and is dedicated to protect and restore Maryland's coastal resources. Both on its own and in collaboration with its many partners, Sea Grant proactively addresses the scientific, economic, and social challenges facing the Chesapeake Bay. Research efforts bolster understanding of major commercial species, including the oyster, blue crab, and striped bass, and bring scientists and managers together to design new ecosystem-based fisheries management regimes.

The MIT Sea Grant College Program is the first institution of higher learning to be appointed a Sea Grant College. The MIT Sea Grant's research programs, dedicated outreach programs, and integrated educational projects are aimed at providing real-world solutions to coastal questions and at helping to create the coastal stewards of tomorrow. The program's innovative marine research includes autonomous underwater vehicles, aquaculture and fisheries, coastal management, underwater communications, and biotechnology.

The Michigan Sea Grant is a cooperative program of University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Through research, education and outreach, the program is dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of the Great Lakes and coastal resources with six extension educators located in coastal communities around the state. Michigan Sea Grant communicators, researchers and specialists provide Great Lakes information to Michigan residents, educators and stakeholders through newsletters and special publications, websites, educational displays, projects and presentations.

The Minnesota Sea Grant, the only Sea Grant program focused entirely on Lake Superior, seeks to maintain and enhance its coastal environment and coastal economy through high-quality research, education, and outreach. This program supports research that will lead to tools and technology for responsible management and policy decisions regarding Lake Superior and inland aquatic economies and resources. Through scientific research and public education programs, the Minnesota Sea Grant conveys the needs of communities, industries, and management agencies to university scientists, and promotes the best and most current science regarding Lake Superior and inland lakes to resource users, managers, and policy-makers.

The Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (MASGC) develops research, education, and outreach programs, and focuses on one the following priority areas: 1) Healthy Coastal Ecosystems, 2) Safe and Sustainable Seafood, 3) Sustainable Coastal Communities, and 4) Hazard Resilience in Coastal Communities. The mission of the MASGC is to enhance the sustainable use and conservation of ocean and coastal resources to benefit the economy and environment in Alabama and Mississippi. To fulfill this mission, MASGC commits to interdisciplinary environmental scholarship and community-based natural resources management so that coastal and marine resources are conserved and managed for a sustainable economy and environment.
