National Climate Change Adaptation Research Plan: Settlements and Infrastructure

April 2012

The National Adaptation Research Plan for Settlements and Infrastructure (Settlements NARP) identifies priority research questions for climate change adaptation issues relevant to Australia’s cities, towns and regions - but offers useful adaptive planning strategies and considerations applicable to practitioners elsewhere. The Settlements NARP was developed in 2010 to identify research required to provide decision makers within government, industry and communities with the information they need to effectively respond and adapt to the impacts of climate change on settlements and infrastructure.

Banking on Green: A Look at How Green Infrastructure Can Save Municipalities Money and Provide Economic Benefits Community-wide

April 2012

Banking on Green describes the cost-effectiveness of green infrastructure (GI) for stormwater management, and the co-benefits of energy reduction, flood mitigation, and improved public health outcomes. American Rivers, Water Environment Federation, American Society of Landscape Architects, and ECONorthwest created this report to put information from GI performance research into the hands of decision makers. Detailing the benefits of green infrastructure, along with documented examples of successful GI practices, this document provides information on the economics and climate change adaptation benefits of GI for policymakers, municipal and utility officials, and the general public.

Community School Parks Program - Los Angeles, California

2012

The Community School Parks program is a partnership service agreement and shared use policy that enables community members in under-resourced neighborhoods to access school parks and playgrounds during off-school hours when they would normally be closed to the public. People for Parks, now a program of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust (LANLT), opened the first Community School Parks in 2012 and has expanded the program since with the partnership with LANLT and the development of the shared use policy with the LA Unified School District that enables expanded access to school parks. These Community School Parks (CSPs) provide opportunities for youth, families, and neighbors within the community to connect, recreate, and enjoy green and open space in a safe environment. The program targets dense neighborhoods, typically low-income and communities of color, that are park-scarce and would not otherwise have access to open space within walking distance. In addition to Community School Parks, LANLT works to create new green space in communities of color, engaging community members from concept development through to implementation and park stewardship.

Cool Roofs and Cool Pavements Toolkit

January 2012

From the Global Cool Cities Alliance, this toolkit provides online access to a comprehensive set of resources for initiating cool roof and pavement programs.  Cool, reflective roofs and pavements are readily available, pay back beyond their investment, and help cities both mitigate and adapt to climate change while making them more desirable and comfortable places to live. Replacing roofs and pavements with more reflective materials also helps to reverse the 'urban heat island effect.'
