The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) began using a variety of new materials and techniques to address drought conditions by reducing or eliminating water use on roadside landscaping following the onset of multi-year severe drought conditions in 2011. New roadside landscaping projects began utilizing recycled water, native grasses and plants that require little or no watering, innovative water collection techniques, and smart irrigation controls. Caltrans’ water conservation efforts are designed to help meet or exceed state water use reduction goals and address growing water scarcity.

The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services’ Drinking Water and Groundwater Bureau (DWGB) developed this action plan to guide the Bureau’s activities in building resilience to climate change impacts in community water systems across the state. The plan identifies examples of adaptation measures for community water systems as well as priority action items DWGB will take with regard to policies, operations, regulations, education/outreach, and technical assistance to help drinking water systems prepare for and respond to climate impacts.

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District (District) requested this vulnerability analysis report, which assesses how climate change will impact the District’s existing, as well as proposed, infrastructure and services. The analysis aims to provide the District with the information needed to make strategic planning decisions, such as capital investments. The report documents how climate change may increase flood events and combined sewer overflow volume during larger precipitation events, and increase risk of odor and corrosion within wastewater facilities as well as decreased flow in waterways during periods of warm weather and drought.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is subtitled A Guide to Help Communities Better Manage Stormwater While Achieving Other Environmental, Public Health, Social and Economic Benefits. The report summarizes green infrastructure approaches for stormwater, and the integration process into planning for and developing sustainable communities. The guide is designed to help stakeholders understand how green infrastructure can enhance their communities, and to develop a plan that can overcome technical, regulatory, financial, and institutional obstacles that can limit the implementation of green infrastructure.

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law the Community Risk and Resiliency Act on September 22, 2014. The legislation requires the impacts of extreme weather – such as storm surge, sea-level rise, and flooding – to be considered in some state permitting and funding decisions. The Act advances a number of important recommendations of the NYS 2100 Commission , which the Governor convened after Superstorm Sandy to develop more resilient infrastructure systems across the state.

Approved by Governor Jerry Brown on September 16, 2014, the California Sustainable Groundwater Management Act implements new groundwater rules for California. Effective as of January 1, 2015, the three-bill package will create local agencies to oversee groundwater extraction, changing the state’s historic practice of allowing landowners to extract any water that lies beneath their land.

From the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this 2014 report was designed to inform Nebraska policy makers, natural resource managers, and the public of past, current, and future climate and the implications of climate change on policy and management. This report summarizes key messages from the U. S. Third National Climate Assessment Report (NCA 2014) and relates them to climatic changes and impacts in Nebraska. Through commentaries from experts in the field, the report discusses the climate-related issues each sector faces, and recommends adaptation strategies to be considered.
