The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Green Works guide is a primer on nature-based approaches that communities can use to respond and prepare for the impacts of climate change. The report highlights some common examples of nature-based adaptation, green projects that communities have implemented, and strategies that communities can use to apply nature-based approaches.

In 2014, Chicago, Illinois released its green stormwater infrastructure plan to improve the city’s water quality, reduce flood risks, and build climate resilience. With 26-miles of lakefront and 28-miles of riverfront, Chicago understands that water is both one of its greatest assets and largest sources of risk. This plan describes ways to integrate green techniques into Chicago’s well established, but already overtaxed stormwater system that will only become more burdened as climate change causes increased precipitation.

The purpose of the Great Lakes Restoration and Climate Change event was to convene Great Lakes leaders and climate experts to assess the range of impacts of climate change on the Great Lakes, and to develop policy-based strategies to integrate climate variation into future restoration and stewardship practices. Jenny Kehl, the director of the Center for Water Policy at University of Wisconsin’s School of Freshwater Sciences, spearheaded the meeting and action plan.

The most comprehensive assessment of scientific knowledge on global climate change to date, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) is being released in four parts between September 2013 and November 2014. The AR5 contains contributions from three Working Groups. Working Group I assesses the physical science basis of climate change, Working Group II assesses impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability, while Working Group III assesses the mitigation of climate change.

The Delaware Climate Change Impact Assessment is a comprehensive statewide report produced by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) Division of Energy and Climate. The report includes a summary of past climate trends and future climate projections for Delaware, and a synthesis of the best available climate science that describes current and future impacts of temperature, precipitation, and sea level rise. The climate change impacts are detailed for five key sectors including public health, water resources, agriculture, wildlife and ecosystems, and infrastructure.

The Sierra Climate Change toolkit addresses climate change across the Sierra Nevada region of California, with localized strategies for emissions reductions and adaptation. The report describes climate change impacts in the Sierra, as well as recent regulations, policy directions, and incentives to reduce emissions and adapt. Adaptation strategies are outlined for water and watershed management, wildlife and habitats, forestry, wildfire, and City and County land-use planning. This 3rd edition from the Sierra Nevada Alliance expands its focus from previous versions with more strategic detail, case studies and further support for the development of an adaptation framework that works within existing planning processes throughout the Sierra.

The Pioneer Valley Climate Action and Clean Energy Plan presents an impact assessment of climate change in the Pioneer Valley region of Massachusetts, and provides many local and regional climate adaptation strategies. This plan identifies the amounts and sources of the Pioneer Valley’s greenhouse gas emissions; offers regional targets for GHG reduction in a Clean Energy Plan Update; and recommends detailed strategies for both mitigating and adapting to climate change impacts.

This case study analyzes the Green Infrastructure Plan released by Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 2011 and estimates quantified benefits for the Plan over a 25-year scenario.The study finds that green infrastructure provides $2.8 million in energy, air quality, and climate related benefits annually, reduced gray infrastructure capital costs by $120 million, and reduced wastewater pumping and treatment costs by $661,000 a year, easily exceeding the costs of implementing green infrastructure.
