This Guidebook is designed for local governments of coastal communities in Florida interested in integrating Adaptation Action Areas (AAAs) into policy and operational frameworks. Adopted into the Florida Statute in 2011 through the Community Planning Act, an “Adaptation Action Area” is an optional designation within a local government comprehensive plan for areas that experience coastal flooding and sea-level rise - for the purpose of prioritizing funding for infrastructure needs and adaptation planning.

This Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) TechBrief summarizes potential impacts of climate change on asphalt and concrete pavement systems and adaptation strategies that transportation agencies might pursue to limit impacts on these systems. The brief indicates that most of the research to date on climate change implications for pavements has been general, but efforts have grown to integrate climate change considerations into pavement design and to predict performance of pavements based on climate scenarios.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is pursuing a “Resilience Pilot Program” (RPP) to improve data and modeling with the aim of reducing incidents of flood, hydraulic-related failure, and extreme weather damage to critical transportation infrastructure. A key element to the new RPP is a partnership with the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS). Leveraging USGS’s resources, the RPP is currently testing new technology such as fixed-wing drone, quad-copter hovercraft and ground based LiDAR imaging to better assess the siting, design, and construction of ADOT’s assets where they interchange with rivers, stream, creeks and floodplains.

The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) developed a high-level vulnerability assessment and adaptation plan (“Adaptation Plan”) for the region’s transportation infrastructure, and is using the plan as a framework to guide future adaptation work and inform planning for transportation investments. The initial findings from the Adaptation Plan are being incorporated into the region’s 2016 long-range transportation plan update. The Adaptation Plan looks at risks to transportation from four primary climate-related threats to the region: extreme temperature; wildfire; precipitation, runoff, and flooding; and landslides.

The Coastal Green Infrastructure and Ecosystem Services Task Force of the National Science and Technology Council has recommended priority areas of research to support the integration of green infrastructure into coastal resilience planning. This report focuses on the ecosystem services provided by coastal green infrastructure (CGI) and recommends areas for prioritized Federal research to support the integration of CGI.

This case study discusses how Washington DC is preparing for the impacts of climate change including sea-level rise, increasing flood risks, and heat waves. The case study explores how District agencies integrated considerations of climate change when developing the city's Sustainable DC plan, which was developed through an interagency working group. This effort spurred the development of a city-wide vulnerability assessment and adaptation plan. The case study also explores the District’s efforts to reduce urban heat islands by making grants to pilot the use of cool roofs, implementing the Smart Roof Initiative to retrofit District-owned buildings, and adopting of a new Green Building Code.

This report was developed to help Rhode Island local governments assess vulnerabilities to natural hazards, such as sea-level rise and coastal flooding, and prepare implementable coastal adaptation strategies. Strategies derived from this process can be included in local planning documents, and used to prioritize adaptation investments through local transportation and capital improvement programs. The stepwise approach described in the report was piloted in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and is intended to provide a model for other municipalities in the state.

Here. Now. Us. was a project launched in 2015 by the County of Marin, California, Climate Access, and the company Owlized to engage community members of the county to better understand local climate impacts, and begin to formulate solutions. To help visualize local sea level rise, OWL viewfinders were installed along a popular coastal multi-use pathway in Mill Valley, Marin County. These viewfinders are modeled after the classic coin-operated binoculars found at scenic viewpoints, but upgraded with 3D visualizations of how these places can be affected by sea level rise.

This resiliency study describes the vulnerability assessment and sea level rise adaptation strategies for two creek systems - San Bruno and Colma - that flow into San Francisco Bay adjacent to the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), San Mateo County, California. SFO - a critical component of the Bay Area economy - and residential neighborhoods within the lower reaches of the San Bruno Creek and Colma Creek watersheds (Project Area) are at risk of severe flooding from these two creeks due to sea level rise.
