This 'Science Perspectives' report, from the Pacific Southwest Research Station of the U.S. Forest Service, discusses biochemical changes in trees stressed by drought and air pollution. Such changes may attract bark beetles, overwhelming the trees' defense mechanisms and increasing their vulnerability to disease, death and the promotion of wildfires. These forest impacts are exacerbated by climate change.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (“Port Authority”) renovated runway 13R-31L at JFK Airport with design features that will help mitigate the urban heat island effect and better manage stormwater. The renovation project featured a number of sustainable initiatives and climate change adaptation measures, designed to reduce the environmental impact of the airport over the lifetime of the runway. A life-cycle cost analysis led the Port Authority to utilize concrete pavement in place of asphalt.

Although the potential for hurricanes under current climatic conditions continue to threaten coastal communities, there is concern that climate change, specifically potential increases in sea level, could influence the impacts of future hurricanes. To examine the potential effect of sea level rise on community vulnerability to future hurricanes, (the authors) assess variations in socio-economic exposure in Sarasota County, FL, to contemporary hurricane storm-surge hazards and to storm-surge hazards enhanced by sea level rise scenarios. Analysis indicates that significant portions of the population, economic activity, and critical facilities are in contemporary and future hurricane storm-surge hazard zones.

In 2007, the Oregon State Legislature charged the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute (OCCRI), via HB 3543, with assessing climate change science including biological, physical and social science in Oregon, and expected climate impacts. This inaugural assessment report is meant to act as a compendium of the relevant research on climate change and its impacts on the state of Oregon. This report draws on a large body of work on climate change impacts in the western U. S. from the Climate Impacts Group at the University of Washington (CIG), and the California Climate Action Team.

Miami-Dade County, Florida’s GreenPrint is a five-year action plan that outlines the County's sustainability goals and achievements. The plan includes strategies to create a new generation of green leaders, use less water and energy, maintain the environment, use land wisely and provide more transportation options, create green jobs, and support healthy communities. A Climate Change Action Plan with adaptation and mitigation goals is built into the larger sustainability document - recognizing the uniquely high risks from climate change in the region.

In 2009, the Florida Oceans and Coastal Council (FOCC) published a report entitled 'The Effects of Climate Change on Florida’s Ocean and Coastal Resources. ' That report focused on what was known, and was possible concerning climate-change effects on the state’s ocean and coastal resources. This report updates and expands a section addressing sea level rise in the 2009 report. This update involved contributions by 5 Council members, 12 contributing authors, and 11 external reviewers whose technical contributions were based principally on literature published by August 2010.

Oregon's Climate Change Adaptation Framework is the result of a collaborative effort between Oregon's state agencies with support from the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute. This report provides a framework for the continued development of strategies and plans to address future climate conditions in the state. Priority climate risks and their respective impacts on key sectors are outlined, followed by over 100 adaptation strategies for near- and long-term planning and implementation.
This framework identifies 11 key risks that are likely to occur.

The Plan, developed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), sets high-level transportation objectives for the state, and offers implementation strategies to meet those objectives.

This 2010 Update to Connecticut's Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan expands the 2007 plan to cover years 2010 - 2013. A good example of mainstreaming the consideration of climate change into existing planning efforts, this update discusses the projected impacts of climate change within each of the major sections of the plan addressing hurricanes, tornadoes, cyclones, precipitation, flooding, droughts, and wildland fires, and their relation to hazard mitigation as a whole.
