As the lead agency in Maryland for climate change adaptation efforts, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued this policy to “provide direction and guidance regarding the Department’s investments in and management of land, resources and assets in the face of climate change.” The policy is “to make sound investments in land and facilities and to manage [DNR] assets and natural resources so as to better understand, mitigate and adapt to climate change.”

Enacted in 2010 by the State of Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources, this document sets forth the Department’s policy to manage the state’s land, natural resources and assets toward better understanding, mitigating and adapting to climate change. In this policy, the Department identifies climate change-related practices, procedures and implementation actions across seven areas: new land investments, facility and infrastructure siting and design, habitat restoration, government operations, research and monitoring, resource planning, and advocacy.

Ordinance 16948, commonly referred to as King County’s Equity and Social Justice Ordinance, establishes definitions and directs implementation steps related to the “fair and just” principle of the adopted 2010-2014 countywide strategic plan. These steps include: applying “equity and social justice foundational practices” to county actions, plans, systems, and budgets; establishing an interbranch team to facilitate accountability and coordination; and releasing an annual equity report.

This vulnerability assessment identifies significant projected climate changes for Lee County, Florida, and the anticipated effects of those changes on both natural and man-made systems in the region. The report also identifies potentially critical vulnerabilities that will need to be addressed by adaptation or accommodation in Lee County. It examines the current climate and ongoing climate change in southwest Florida along with five future scenarios of climate change into the year 2100. These scenarios include:
a condition that involves a future in which mitigative actions are undertaken to reduce the human influence on climate change (Stanton and Ackerman 2007),
a 90% probable future predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 2007b),
a 50% probable future predicted by IPCC,
a 5% probable future predicted by the IPCC, and
a “very worst” future in which no actions are taken to address climate change (Stanton and Ackerman 2007).

Building on the Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for Lee County, Florida the CCRS includes a process for identifying potential climate change resiliency strategies through coordination and consultation with local government leadership in 39 Lee County departments and divisions. Identification of resiliency strategies that could be utilized by Lee County to reduce the negative effects of climate change help in positioning the County to take advantage of potential climate prosperity opportunities.

The Surfer’s Point Managed Shoreline Retreat Project involved the relocation of a bike path and parking lot along 1,800 feet of shoreline in City of San Buenaventura, Ventura County. The transportation assets affected by the project include a damaged bike path, a 223-space parking lot for the Ventura County Fairgrounds, and Shoreline Drive. Surfer’s Point is a beach and popular surf break at mouth of the Ventura River.

This presentation provides a synthesis of the analysis conducted on the economic impacts of climate change on the Gulf Coast. The research provides current and projected costs of storm surges, sea level rise, and wind related damage over the next 20 years.
