City of Chicago, Illinois

When it comes to adapting to climate change, the City of Chicago continues to provide important leadership. The City's "Lead by Example Workplans" identify more than 470 actions the city could take to adapt to or mitigate climate change, and the city's climate action plan remains one of the best models in the country.

As part of its plan, the city has heavily promoted green and cool roofs to reduce urban heat and heat-related health problems and is home to the largest number of green roofs in the country.  Chicago is also implementing best practices to reduce storm water and sewage overflows due to increased precipitation - a problem which could flood basements and pollute the city's beaches and drinking water in the future if left unchecked.
