Climate Ready Communities: A Strategy for Adapting to Impacts of Climate Change on the Oregon Coast

Developed by the Oregon Coastal Management Program, this report is designed to help Oregon's local decision-makers prepare adaptation plans and state agencies to coordinate their infrastructure plans with local adaptation initiatives. Key objectives of this strategy are: 1) to enable coastal local governments to prepare adaptation plans by 2015 to account for the effects of climate change on property, infrastructure, habitats, and resources; and 2) to ensure that public infrastructure and investment decisions made by the State of Oregon are coordinated with local government climate change adaptation plans.

Climate Change and Potential Impacts to Wildlife in Tennessee

Congress charged each state and territory with developing a wildlife action plan in order to receive funds through the Wildlife Conservation and Restoration Program and the State Wildlife Grants Program. These proactive plans, known also as “Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategies,” assess the health of each state’s wildlife and habitats, identify the problems they face, and outline the actions that are needed to conserve them over the long term.

Gulf Coast Governors' Action Plan II: For Healthy and Resilient Coasts (2009-2014)

The Gulf of Mexico Alliance, a network of federal agencies and Gulf Coast state agencies, resource managers and planners, prepared this 5-year regional plan for action that addresses several climate related issues facing the Gulf. The plan addresses four distinct challenges: 1) the need to maintain healthy Gulf Coast economies while using coastal resources sustainably; 2) the imperative of improving the health of Gulf ecosystems; 3) adapting to sea-level rise; and 4) mitigating the effects of decreased water quality.

A Transportation Research Program for Mitigating and Adapting to Climate Change and Conserving Energy (TRB Special Report 299)

In 2008, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Executive Committee recognized that major legislation might be enacted in 2009 that could have profound effects on future surface transportation policies at all levels of government. The TRB Executive Committee recognized that new research and policy analysis would be needed to inform decisions at all levels of government in responding to the challenges of reducing transportation energy consumption and GHG emissions. In reviewing proposals for transportation research programs as part of reauthorizing the federal surface transportation program, the Executive Committee also found a gap: no proposals explicitly addressed research to mitigate GHG emissions and energy consumption attributable to passenger and freight travel, or to adapt to climate change.

Rising Waters: Helping Hudson River Communities Adapt to Climate Change Scenario Planning 2010-2030, Final Report

The Rising Waters project aims to strengthen the preparedness and adaptive capacity of the Hudson River Estuary Watershed to meet the impacts of future climate change. To help local communities of the Hudson Valley to prepare for climate impacts, the Rising Waters project used scenario planning methodologies to educate participants on important aspects of complicated problems and build a shared conceptual framework for dialogue leading to potential solutions. The report overviews the key climate risks for the region, and describes the multi-stakeholder convening process, scenario planning, and resiliency framework development.

Stormy Seas: Land Trusts Navigate the Uncertainties Surrounding Climate Change

This three-page article reviews the ways that climate change mitigation activities and adaptation strategies may connect to the core work of land trusts - particularly land acquisition and stewardship. This paper provides a basic framework that land trusts can use to decide whether they might integrate climate considerations into their activities and general guidelines in order to do so. .

Federal Agency Strategic Sustainability Performance Plans (SSPP)

On October 5, 2009, President Obama signed the Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance Executive Order (E. O. 13514) requiring each federal agency to develop, implement, and annually update an integrated Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan (SSPP). Each plan includes a discussion of the climate change risks and vulnerabilities on the agency's operations and mission. The E. O. also requires agencies to actively participate in the Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force and “develop approaches through which the policies and practices of the agencies can be made compatible with and reinforce that strategy.

Community-Based Adaptation to the Health Impacts of Climate Change

This article, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, proposes a course of action for community-based adaptation to help communities better prepare for and respond to the health risks of climate change. The report is designed to engage stakeholders in a proactive problem-solving process to enhance preparedness for adaptation. Community-based adaptation is discussed as an approach to proactive implementation of programs and activities necessary to cope with the impacts of a changing climate on the health sector.
