Tribal Leaders Summit on Climate Change: A Focus on Climate Adaptation Planning and Implementation
November 2015
In November 2015, the University of Arizona Native Nations Climate Adaptation Program and Center for Climate Adaptation Science and Solutions convened tribal environmental managers and leaders at a Tribal Leaders Summit to share experiences and build capacity in climate adaptation planning. Participants shared adaptation planning successes and lessons learned, discussed opportunities to supplement climate science with traditional knowledge, and offered feedback on the challenges to implementation.

Here-Now-Us "OWL" Virtual Reality SLR Project
2015
Here. Now. Us. was a project launched in 2015 by the County of Marin, California, Climate Access, and the company Owlized to engage community members of the county to better understand local climate impacts, and begin to formulate solutions. To help visualize local sea level rise, OWL viewfinders were installed along a popular coastal multi-use pathway in Mill Valley, Marin County. These viewfinders are modeled after the classic coin-operated binoculars found at scenic viewpoints, but upgraded with 3D visualizations of how these places can be affected by sea level rise.

Game of Floods

The County of Marin, California's “Game of Floods” is an interactive game on sea level rise climate adaptation for Marin and the San Francisco Bay Area. The game is a model for public engagement and education on coastal adaptation - with information on climate impacts and adaptation options, encouraging discussions on the benefits and tradeoffs of adaptation measures.

The Preparation Frame: A Guide to Building Understanding of Climate Impacts and Engagement in Solutions

The Preparation Frame offers guidance on climate change communication methods and strategies, and focuses on helping communities to prepare for and reduce the risks of climate disruption. The guide describes how to strategically frame the climate conversation, and effectively convey vulnerabilities and the need to plan for and reduce associated impacts. The report presents guiding principles for solutions-based messaging around both the challenges and opportunities for climate mitigation and adaptation.

Equity Checklist
2015
This one-page Equity Checklist was designed for planners and funders to ensure the leadership of disadvantaged communities in projects that impact them. This checklist was designed to serve as a purposefully simple framework to a) identify vulnerable populations, b) think through the equity implications of their work, and c) promote respectful collaborations with community groups. Funders can use the checklist as criteria for their grant giving, and agencies can use it as a helpful guide to plan projects.

Oakland Community Climate Action Guide

Developed by the Oakland Climate Action Coalition, this online interactive guide is intended to connect residents of Oakland, California with the information and resources that they need to take personal action to address and prepare for climate change impacts, starting at home. The guide focuses on everyday actions that residents can take before and in the midst of coastal flooding, extreme heat, wildfire, rising utility prices, poor air quality, and more. The guide also includes local sources of information and support to help residents take next steps towards preparedness.

Risk Communication Toolkit for Flooding in Oregon

Designed for Oregon’s local health departments, the Risk Communication Toolkit for Flooding includes information about common health risks posed by floods, highlights communications best practices during emergencies, and offers a variety of sample communication materials to address risks related to flooding. While not explicit about the link between climate change and the increasing frequency and severity of rain events, the toolkit serves to help local health departments quickly and effectively educate the public about risks during an emergency.
