Rhode Island Socioeconomics of Sea Level Rise

A project from the Rhode Island Division of Statewide Planning, Socioeconomics of Sea Level Rise (SLR) identifies the demographic and socioeconomic makeup of the communities located within multiple sea level rise inundation scenarios in Rhode Island. Serving as a resource in sea level rise planning, the Division suggests that data included in this project can be used for capital improvement planning, transportation planning, and overall long-range planning in communities.

This report from the City of Carlsbad, California - located along the state’s southern coast - evaluates the magnitude and likelihood of impacts due to sea level rise and coastal hazards on city assets. The report considers damage to assets from flooding and erosion based on sea level rise scenarios through 2050 and 2100. Vulnerability ratings are given by asset type, along with recommended adaptation strategies to inform planning, decision-making, and the city’s Local Coastal Program and Zoning Ordinance.

4th National Climate Assessment, Volume I: Climate Science Special Report

The Climate Science Special Report is Volume I of the Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCA4). This technical document is the physical science foundation for the assessment, providing an updated analysis of climate change effects across the U. S. The National Climate Assessments are congressionally mandated to assess and inform the nation about the impacts of climate change. The third National Climate Assessment was released in 2014, and NCA4 builds upon this analysis with updated detail.

The State of Washington Department of Ecology Toxic Cleanup Program (TCP) has assessed the vulnerability of toxic cleanup sites to climate change impacts, and offers guidance in this report to site managers on these risks. The guide supports the development of site level climate vulnerability assessments and adaptation strategies for any stage of a cleanup - including site investigations; remedy selection, design, and implementation; and operation and maintenance.

Post Hurricane Sandy Transportation Resilience Study in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut

The Federal Highway Administration led a Hurricane Sandy Resiliency Study to inform ways to improve resilience of the tri-state New York - New Jersey - Connecticut region's transportation system and to inform disaster recovery efforts. The study, which began in 2013 and was completed in late 2017, involved a detailed assessment of the impacts and disruption caused by Hurricane Sandy as well as from several other extreme weather events occurring in the area in 2011, and analyzed vulnerability and risk to the tri-state transportation system at three different scales: regional (entire study area), subarea (corridor/small network), and facility.

The Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change

The Lancet Countdown is an international, multidisciplinary research collaboration that has developed indicators to track the progress of climate change mitigation and adaptation in terms of public health globally. The analysis provides an assessment of the health effects of climate change, the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and the health implications of these actions on populations worldwide. In 2016 the Lancet Countdown proposed a set of potential indicators to be monitored, and coordinated a global analysis to define this conclusive set of indicators for 2017.

U.S. GAO report: Climate Change - Information on Potential Economic Effects Could Help Guide Federal Efforts to Reduce Fiscal Exposure (GAO-17-720)

The U. S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has analyzed the current and long-term aggregate economic impacts of climate change on the U. S. , the methods utilized for climate economic impact assessments, and the accuracy of modeling these projections. GAO investigated the financial risks to the federal government, and this report also provides information about how these economic impacts could inform efforts to manage climate risks across the federal government. Ultimately, GAO concludes that “the federal government has not undertaken strategic, government-wide planning to manage climate risks, using the best available information, including information on the potential economic effects of climate change, to identify and assess significant risks.

The State of Narragansett Bay and Its Watershed
2017
This analysis assesses the current conditions and projected trends for the Narragansett Bay, a watershed that spans Rhode Island and Massachusetts and is home to 1. 95 million people. The research is the culmination of multiple years of study by universities, organizations, federal partners, and agencies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The results are presented in a shorter summary document and a 500-page technical report. In addition to other stressors including water quality and pollution, urbanization, and changes to habitats, the researchers look at the impacts of climate change now and in the future.

NYSERDA - Population Vulnerability to Climate Change in New York State

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) identified current and future vulnerability to extreme heat across New York State, focusing on community and individual health risk factors. A heat-vulnerability index was developed, and a heat-health impact assessment was conducted using ClimAID climate projections. The study included an assessment of the adequacy and accessibility of cooling centers, and the public’s awareness of cooling centers and heat warning systems or adaptation resources across New York.
