The "hopeful side of climate change," as presented by the Wildlife Conservation Society, can be found in this portfolio of conservation practices that support wildlife and ecosystem adaptation to climate impacts. Twelve case studies feature organizations and their climate-informed strategies and innovative long-term goals that are ready to evolve with the impacts of climate change. The case studies included reflect projects that were were supported by the Wildlife Conservation Society Climate Adaptation Fund.

The U. S. DOI/USGS Northwest Climate Science Center (NW CSC) has announced 2018 funding available for Principal Investigators (PIs) from the NW CSC University Consortium (University of Washington, Boise State Univ. , Univ. of Montana, Washington State Univ. , and Western Washington Univ. ) as well as all USGS PIs. Funded projects will address the goals identified in the NW CSC Science Agenda for 2018-23, through scientific research or data synthesis on climate impacts on endangered species, regional adaptation and management, and social systems.

California’s Climate Adaptation Strategy 2018 Update describes the state’s progress in climate adaptation and presents an actionable plan for the near future. Building on the 2009 California Adaptation Strategy and the 2014 Safeguarding California Plan, the 2018 report is directed by Assembly Bill 1482 (2015-16) to update the state’s adaptation strategy every three years.

The 2017 edition of Oregon’s Integrated Water Resources Strategy builds on the state’s 2012 strategy and is aimed at predicting and meeting the state’s instream and out-of-stream water needs, both now and in the future. The updated version addresses climate change as a “cross-cutting issue” and illustrates the need for continuous monitoring of water resources as predictions based off of historical data becomes unpredictable because of climate change. California’s Wildlife Conservation Board, within the Department of Fish and Wildlife, is a separate and independent Board with authority and funding to carry out an acquisition and development program for wildlife conservation. The Climate Adaptation and Resiliency Program was created by CA Assembly Bill 109 in 2017 to provide $20,000,000 to the Wildlife Conservation Board for local assistance, payable from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF), a statewide cap-and-trade program. The program funds are to be used for climate adaption and resiliency projects that will result in conservation and restoration of natural and working lands, and wildlife populations.

Administered by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Tribal Wildlife Grants program is a competitive grant program available to federally-recognized Indian tribes to conserve fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats. More than $60 million has gone to Native American tribes through the Tribal Wildlife Grants program since 2003, providing support for 350 conservation projects administered by participating Federally-recognized tribes. This wildlife conservation funding includes that for the focal species of Native American cultural or traditional importance, and species that are not hunted or fished.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation created the WCS Climate Adaptation Fund to “incentivize new and innovative efforts to help wildlife and ecosystems respond to climate change. ” As of 2016, the WCS Climate Adaptation Fund awarded more than $12 million to 66 adaptation projects across the United States. This report presents 14 climate change adaptation strategies or “solutions” for sustaining wildlife populations and ecosystems, with examples of projects supported by the Climate Adaptation Fund that exemplify each solution.

In June 2017, the Louisiana State Legislature unanimously approved the state’s 2017 Coastal Master Plan, which updates the state’s 2012 plan. The Coastal Master Plan provides a 50-year blueprint for directing Louisiana’s investments, regulations, and programs in coastal restoration, resilience, and protection. The plan recommends 124 projects to restore coastal ecosystems, build flood control structures, and enhance land-use policies to reduce flood risks in coastal Louisiana communities and to enhance coastal economies and ecosystems.
