January 21, 2022
On January 21, 2022, the Maryland Commission on Climate Change’s Adaptation and Resiliency Work Group in collaboration with the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Integration and Application Network (UMCES-IAN) released the 2021 Maryland Coastal Adaptation Report Card. Informed by stakeholder engagement, the Coastal Adaptation Report Card “gives a snapshot of the current adaptation status in Maryland’s coastal zone, and establishes a framework for measuring future progress.

The “Sea the Future” tool was developed by the State of California to help the state’s local planners and residents understand and be able to select from among a dozen different sea-level rise and flooding visualization tools that may be useful in efforts to plan for sea-level rise. Sea the Future provides summaries and information on tool features, similarities and differences across tools, and advantages and disadvantages of each tool so that end-users can make an informed decision about which tool(s) to use to support decisionmaking.

The Coastal Inundation Toolkit was developed by the Digital Coast Partnership Group to help communities understand and address coastal inundation issues - where water covers what is normally dry land. Information and resources are organized into 5 stages: understanding coastal inundation, identifying community risks and vulnerabilities, creating inundation maps, communicating risks and vulnerability, and discovering what others are doing to address inundation. For each of these 5 areas, explanations and guidance are provided with links to the specific resources available from Digital Coast to support that specific step in the process, making this a user-friendly way to support assessments and planning for sea level rise and extreme weather events.

February 16, 2021
In February 2021, Enterprise Community Partners and the City of Miami, Florida released Keep Safe Miami, a set of tools aimed at owners and operators of affordable multifamily housing properties in Miami-Dade County. The tools can help property owners identify potential adaptation actions to increase the resilience of existing affordable housing to local climate change hazards, including sea-level rise and extreme weather events. Owners and operators of affordable housing units can use Keep Safe Miami’s resources to compare climate-related risks, prioritize adaptation strategies, and access local, state, and federal funding sources. As part of the program, the City of Miami also set aside $500,000 in deferred loans for owners and operators participating in the Keep Safe Miami program.

STORMTOOLS is a set of comprehensive mapping tools providing a series of maps and data sets that depict the sea level rise and storm surge in Rhode Island. The site now features a set of data layers for municipalities. STORMTOOLS is intended as a way to make the data outputs of a complex set of modeling processes freely available, and is designed to help homeowners and municipalities in Rhode Island better understand their risks from coastal storms and flooding, and to plan for sea level rise.

The U.S. Sea Level Change website, published in September 2024, is a multi-agency effort to provide accessible, authoritative sea-level science and education at the state, regional, and national levels. The website includes a sea-level change data explorer that illustrates past, present, and future sea level trends and impacts, including flooding. The site also hosts a comprehensive “Sea Level 101” guide that explains how sea level is defined, measured, and modeled, as well as personal impacts and actions.

The Regional Resilience Exposure Tool (R2ET) is an interactive mapping tool that illustrates current and projected coastal flooding risks to resources in the Northeast Florida region. The types of flooding mapped are FEMA flood hazard zones, storm surge, depth of flood at defined storm occurrence intervals, and sea level rise at defined water levels. Users can select data layers for resources to overlay on flooding layers including critical facilities, priority wildlife species, and vulnerable populations.

The Living Shoreline Academy is an interactive website that provides a range of tools for property owners, contractors, and state and local governments about how to design, build, permit, and maintain living shorelines to mitigate erosion on shoreline property. "Living shorelines" use natural features combined with placement of stone or other small structures to provide shoreline protection that maintains and enhances important coastal ecosystem functions. Living shorelines are a strategy that many states and communities are considering for enhancing coastal resilience to sea-level rise and the impacts of climate change.
