The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Environmental Research Program includes a focal Research Area of Climate Change Adaptation. This document focuses on the climate change adaptation component of the program’s comprehensive research plan. NYSERDA’s adaptation research aims to provide “a scientific foundation for formulating effective, equitable, energy-related environmental policies and resource management practices that can guide strategies to prepare for a changing climate.

From California Governor Gavin Newsom, this Executive Order directs CAL FIRE and other state agencies to recommend administrative, regulatory, and policy changes to prevent and mitigate wildfires. To support the California communities most vulnerable to wildfire impacts, the California Department of Fire and Forest Protection (CAL FIRE) will also recommend a methodology to assess what communities are at greater risk from wildfire that includes socioeconomic factors. The order states that California's “present emergency condition” with wildfire is due to a history of fire exclusion, forests managed to be overcrowded, climate change and drought.

The 2019 update report from the Maine Interagency Climate Adaptation Work Group (MICA), a collaboration of eight state agencies, provides an inventory and status update of climate adaptation and mitigation activities by the state and is the second update to the original 2014 Maine Prepares for Climate Change report. This report was developed for the leadership of the departments, agencies, and offices participating in MICA, aiming to increase awareness of adaptation actions taken by the state, improve communication between agencies, and provide recommendations on future work.

This report issued by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Department of the Interior quantifies the value of U. S. coral reefs in protecting people and infrastructure from coastal hazards that will be exacerbated by climate change and sea-level rise including extreme weather events, flooding, and erosion. The report is intended to inform stakeholders and decision-makers of the value of coral reefs in reducing risk from coastal hazards, and to provide quantitative data that can be used to consider the role coral reefs should play in adaptation and risk mitigation planning.

This guide is an online resource highlighting 25 “green” activities or elements from FEMA’s 2017 Community Rating System (CRS) Coordinator’s Manual. FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)’s CRS is a voluntary insurance rating program that recognizes communities for implementing floodplain management practices that exceed the Federal minimum requirements of NFIP. In exchange for flood risk reduction practices, policyholders can receive reduced flood insurance premiums. The guide was designed to give local planners and floodplain managers information to support more participation in CRS and to increase flood resilience by protecting and strengthening natural ecosystems.

Administered by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, this grant program offers funds for wetland restoration or enhancement projects that result in a net reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Wetland restoration is both a climate change mitigation and adaptation strategy. Wetlands sequester carbon at high rates, while providing protection from flooding, sea level rise, coastal storm surge, and coastal erosion, as well as offer drought mitigation through groundwater recharge.

In 2019, the Maryland Department of the Environment published the Maryland Climate Adaptation and Resilience Draft Framework: 2021-2030 (Framework). The result of a year's worth of working group sessions between representatives from state agencies, local government, non-profit organizations, and academia, the Framework is designed to serve as a statewide guide to help establish ongoing climate adaptation goals through 2030 and beyond.

The City of Baltimore, Maryland Disaster Preparedness and Planning Project (DP3) was first completed in 2013 and has been updated in 2018, to reflect the city’s commitment to reduce impact from current and future natural hazards, including climate change. Entitled a "combined all-hazard mitigation and climate adaptation plan," the 2018 DP3 identifies Baltimore's vulnerabilities to hazards including coastal storms, flooding, extreme heat, and high winds. The plan focuses on developing strategies that will reduce or eliminate loss of life and property damage within priority urban sectors of Infrastructure, Buildings, Natural Systems, and Public Services.

On November 23, 2018, the U. S. Global Change Research Program released Volume II of the Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCA4) entitled Impacts, Risks and Adaptation in the United States. NCA4 includes sixteen chapters focusing on national topics and specific sectors, nine chapters focusing on different regions of the country, and two chapters focusing on both mitigation (reducing greenhouse gas emissions) and adaptation responses to climate change. NCA4 concludes that: “ [o]bservations collected around the world provide significant, clear, and compelling evidence that global average temperature is much higher, and is rising more rapidly, than anything modern civilization has experienced, with widespread and growing impacts.
