Nature-Based Solutions Resource Guide 2.0

December 9, 2023

The Nature-Based Solutions Resource Guide 2. 0, released by the White House in December of 2023, aims to encourage implementation and awareness of nature-based solutions employed by federal agencies and partners. The Guide defines nature-based solutions as “actions to protect, sustainably manage, or restore natural or modified ecosystems to address societal challenges, simultaneously providing benefits for people and the environment. ” Nature-based solutions can be used to provide a wide range of benefits, such as supporting wildlife, reducing heat stress, reducing future disaster risk, and overcoming environmental injustices.

Montana HB883 (2023): Funding for Fire Suppression and Preparedness Efforts

May 22, 2023

On May 22, 2023, the Montana State Legislature passed House Bill 883. HB 883 amended Montana Code § 76-13-150 (2023), adding a one-time grant of $152 million to the fire suppression account in the state special revenue fund and expanding fund usage to include fire preparedness.

Woodbury, New Jersey: Ordinance No. 2386.23 - Freeboard Regulations

May 15, 2023

In a bid to promote public health and safety while also limiting flood-related losses, the City of Woodbury, New Jersey, passed Ordinance no. 2386.23, which introduces regulations for development in flood hazard areas. Most notably, the ordinance establishes additional freeboard for critical facilities, and directly points to the authority of the American Society of Civil Engineers in its standard for Flood Resistant Design and Construction (ASCE 24) as the explanation for doing so.
