Climate-smart health care as described in this report addresses how hospitals and health systems can prepare for climate change and its implications for public health, with a focus on extreme weather events. The costs for hospitals and care facilities associated with lack of preparation for these events - including severe storms, flooding, extreme temperatures, wildfires - are discussed in detail. The report also describes the benefits of preparedness, how “smart executives can take action,” and provides case studies of adaptation to extreme events in the health sector.

The CalBRACE (California Building Resilience Against Climate Effects) Project of the California Department of Public Health (DPH) developed 58 Climate Change and Health Profile Reports – one for each county in the state. The reports outline climate projections for extreme heat, sea level rise, wildfires, drought and air quality, as well as climate related health risks and indicators for social vulnerability. Adaptation strategies are outlined for each county also, to address these public health impacts.

The Climate Change and Health Equity Program of the California Department of Public Health developed Climate Change and Health Vulnerability Indicators for California. The indicators can help communities and local decision makers to better understand the populations that are more at risk for climate change induced or exacerbated health impacts. DPH suggests that the indicators can be used to screen and prioritize public health action to increase resilience. There are 21 indicators, organized into three domains: environmental exposures, population sensitivity, and adaptive capacity.

The Third Oregon Climate Assessment Report (OCAR3) released in January 2017 summarizes current climate change science and impacts for Oregon, while building on the previous assessment reports from 2010 and 2013. The legislatively mandated report was produced by the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute at Oregon State University in response to Oregon House Bill 3543 - “Global Warming Actions” - which requires a bi-annual assessment to the Legislative Assembly and Governor by the Research Institute with the likely effects of climate change on the state.

This report summarizes the progress of activities outlined in the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) 2012 Environmental Justice Strategy, which complies with Executive Order 12898, Federal Actions to Address Environmental Justice in Minority Populations and Low-Income Populations (Clinton, 1994). The report identifies priority focus areas for HHS, one of which is climate change. The agency's accomplishments to advance the 2012 Strategy as of 2016 are detailed, including the progress status of 37 actions related to environmental justice that HHS committed to in 2012.

Adapt Alaska is a website which hosts information about climate impacts in Alaska, a set of steps for policymakers and planners to create monitoring, mitigation, and adaptation solutions, and various resources and case studies designed to guide the user in developing and funding their own adaptation projects. The website emerged from a collaborative research project—Promoting Coastal Resilience in Arctic Alaska— which included workshops and outreach efforts, during which coastal community resilience workshop participants identified issues they faced from rapidly changing environmental and climate conditions. This learning and planning tool provides both background information about the impacts of climate change on Alaska and resources to adapt to this change, while incorporating considerations of cultural values into strategies.

A Greater LA: Climate Action Framework was developed by the Los Angeles Regional Collaborative for Climate Action and Sustainability (LARC) to help leaders in the LA region identify and implement the most promising and effective measures for reducing emissions and increasing resilience to climate change. It was designed to prioritize issues and actions that can have the most regional impact and that require more cross-county coordination.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed climate communication materials that summarize key points from the USGCRP U.S. Climate and Health Assessment for the different populations that are disproportionately affected by climate-change impacts. The assessment provides a comprehensive analysis of observed and projected health impacts from climate change, and specifies the impacts on a range of vulnerable populations. The eight assessment kits distill this information and focus on the climate impact attributes respective to each population of concern, while offering educational materials and communication strategies.

BoCo Strong uses this county-wide assessment to develop a shared vision of resilience and to better understand the steps that Boulder County, Colorado should take to build resilience. The report defines resilience, outlines a framework to assess if something is resilient, and reviews the challenges and opportunities to build resilience within six sectors: Community, Economy, Health and Social, Housing, Infrastructure, and Natural Environment. The report concludes with cross-sector and sector-specific recommendations to inform work, build partnerships, fill gaps, and increase capacity in the region.
