In 2013 and 2014, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), General Services Administration, US Global Change Research Program, National Capital Planning Commission, Smithsonian Institution, and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments sponsored two series of workshops to assist with climate adaptation planning and improve coordination in the Washington D. C. / National Capital Region. The report “Building a Climate Resilient National Capital Region: Federal and community agencies working together on climate preparedness and resilience” summarizes the Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation workshop series, providing the results and adaptation strategies proposed for the National Capital Region.

In this report from Climate Central, the combined impacts of climate change and urban heat islands are described, as taken from analysis of 60 of the biggest cities across the U.S. The study looked at how much hotter the urban environments are compared to nearby rural areas, and how these temperature differences have been changing since 1970.

The 2014 Safeguarding California Plan augments previously identified strategies in light of advances in climate science and risk management options.

Two major packages of legislation directly supporting Washington D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray’s 'Sustainable DC' initiative have been adopted. The ‘Sustainable DC Act of 2012’ was signed into law January 2013, and the ‘Sustainable DC Omnibus Amendment Act of 2014’ on July 29, 2014.

‘The Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes 1970-2012’ describes the distribution and impacts of weather, climate, and water-related disasters and highlights measures to increase resilience. The report considers the importance of historical, geo-referenced information about deaths and damages to estimate risks before the next disaster occurs. This information is intended to support practical decisions on reducing potential impacts by, for example, improved early warning systems, retrofitting critical infrastructure, or enforcing new building codes.

The San Diego Foundation’s Regional Focus 2050 Study explores what the San Diego region will be like in the year 2050 if current climate change trends continue. The report describes the projected impacts of climate change affecting the San Diego region related to extreme weather events, water supply, wildfires, natural resources and public health, as well as a wide range of adaptive strategies for local leaders to consider. This report is part of an effort by the Climate Education Partners (CEP) to develop and implement a climate change education plan for the San Diego region of California.
