Created by the Louisiana-Mississippi Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Working Group of the Executive Office of the President, under President Obama, this strategy document, or "roadmap," provides guidance to Working Group members to address policy, process, and legal hurdles to coastal restoration in the region. It outlines specific actions to take place over 18 months in 2010 and part of 2011 for these participating agencies. It also lays the foundation for a long-term vision to be achieved jointly with the states in the region.

Because land protection decisions are long-term, hard to reverse, and resource intensive, these decisions are important to consider in the context of climate change. Climate change may directly affect the services intended for protection and parcel selection can exacerbate or ameliorate certain impacts. Therefore, when considering long-term acquisition strategies, land protection programs should be considering both the mitigation potential of land through carbon sequestration and the adaptation potential of the land for preserving wildlife migration routes, protecting water sources, and buffering infrastructure and development from storm events.

This Action Plan describes how the Initiative was to be executed from 2010 through 2014, building on the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration Strategy (GLRC Strategy), which provided the framework for the Action Plan.

This high-level assessment addresses climate change impacts and vulnerabilities in Rhode Island, and provides recommendations intended to support state and local planning efforts. The U. S. Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART (Sustain and Manage America's Resources for Tomorrow) program is working to achieve a sustainable water strategy to meet the Nation's water needs. WaterSMART allows all bureaus of the Department to work with States, Tribes, local governments, and non-governmental organizations to pursue a sustainable water supply for the Nation by establishing a framework to provide federal leadership and assistance on the efficient use of water, integrating water and energy policies to support the sustainable use of all natural resources, and coordinating the water conservation activities of the various Interior offices.
