This report describes observed and potential effects of global climate change on species and ecosystems. It reviews climate change adaptation plans and other planning approaches from the United States, Canada, England, Mexico, and South Africa. The report also includes sixteen possible adaptation strategies, all proposed in scientific literature and public policy documents, that directly address the conservation of biological diversity. These strategies are grouped into four broad categories: land and water protection and management, direct species management, monitoring and planning, and law and policy.

Alaska's Immediate Action Workgroup (IAWG) of the Governor’s Executive Subcabinet on Climate Change was formed in 2007 to make and prioritize annual recommendations to address impacts to the state's communities from climate change. The Workgroup released its first report in 2008, addressing known climate threats to communities caused by coastal erosion, thawing permafrost, flooding, and fires. The climate impacts are assessed and recommendations are made for each of the Alaskan communities of Kivalina, Koyukuk, Newtok, Shaktoolik, Shismaref, and Unalakleet.

This report describes urban heat island effects on Dallas, Texas, and options that could be implemented to help reduce these effects. It summarizes the goals, costs, benefits, actions, and incentives that Dallas has available to cool the city. These include: (1) expanded use and care of trees and vegetation, (2) cool (reflective) and green roofs, and (3) cool or permeable paving strategies that can help cool the city and address storm water issues.

In March 2009, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection published a series of eight sector-based reports; each defining current climate impacts, actions the Department is taking, and recommended actions to foster adaptation at local and regional levels. The eight reports address the sectors of: Biodiversity, Fisheries, Forestry, Infrastructure, Coastal, Recreation, Water Resources and Wildlife.

The City of Toronto in Ontario, Canada Eco-Roof Incentive Program provides grants to commercial, industrial and institutional property owners to improve the sustainability of Toronto's infrastructure and its resilience to climate change. Financial incentives are provided for the construction of green roofs that support vegetation and cool roofs that reflect the sun's thermal energy. Launched in 2009, the program supports the City's Climate Change Action Plan and complements the City's 'Green Roof Bylaw' and the 'Green Standard' by encouraging owners of existing buildings to retrofit their roofs.

The New Hampshire Climate Change Policy Task Force released its Climate Action Plan in March 2009, addressing both mitigation and adaptation. In this report, 67 recommended actions are organized within 10 strategies, of which one strategy is to "Plan for how to address existing and potential climate change impacts."

From the U. S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), "The Essential Principles of Climate Science" presents important introductory information about the Earth's climate, impacts of climate change, and approaches for adapting and mitigating change. This climate science literacy guide identifies the essential principles and fundamental concepts for individuals and communities to understand the Earth’s climate system. It intends to improve the ability to make informed decisions about activities that increase vulnerability to the impacts of climate change, and to take the steps to reduce those vulnerabilities.

In June 2005, Executive Order S-05-05 was signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger which mandated the preparation of biennial science assessment reports on climate change impacts and adaptation options for California. The first Climate Action Team (CAT) Assessment Report was produced in March 2006. This 2009 assessment expands on the policy-oriented 2006 assessment, and provides new information and scientific findings including: 1) the development of new climate and sea-level projections using new information and tools that have become available in the last two years; and 2) an evaluation of climate change within the context of broader social changes, such as land-use changes and demographic shifts.

In the fall of 2008, the Climate Leadership Initiative (CLI) and the National Center for Conservation Science & Policy (NCCSP) (now the GEOS Institute), in partnership with the Mapped Atmosphere-Plant-Soil-System (MAPSS) Team at the U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, initiated a project to assess the likely consequences of climate change for the Upper Willamette River Basin.

Climate change impacts on the natural provision of biodiversity and four key ecosystem services in California (carbon sequestration, forage production, water for instream flows for salmon, and snow recreation), and the resulting change in market and non. market values of each service, are presented in this report. Specifically, the study considers the effect of climate change on the social cost and the market value of carbon sequestration, the profits associated with the production of natural forage, and the consumer surplus of skiing and salmon fishing.
