System for Assessing Vulnerability of Species (SAVS) Climate Change Tool

2011

Ecologists and biologists from the USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) developed a System for Assessing Vulnerability of Species (SAVS) to climate change as a tool for natural resource and wildlife managers to quantify the impacts of expected climate change on terrestrial vertebrates and inform species conservation and management planning. The SAVS climate change tool ranks species in the order of their relative vulnerability or resilience based on species data and expected changes in temperature, precipitation, and vegetation.

CalEPA’s Urban Heat Island Interactive Maps

CalEPA’s Urban Heat Island Interactive Maps: The California Environmental Protection Agency has released an interactive urban heat map tool that shows heat islands throughout the state of California. Using Google Earth, the tool color codes the heat of cities according to intensity, with green at the lowest temperatures, and red at the highest. Temperatures were taken over the summer of two years—2006 and 2013. One of the outputs the map provides is an urban heat index, which quantifies the extent and severity of an urban heat island in a particular area within a city.

2015

The Coastal Flood Exposure Mapper is an online mapping tool to view flooding hazards potential for the East Coast, West Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and Hawaiian coastal communities in the U.S. The mapper was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to promote adaptation planning around coastal flood hazard risks and associated vulnerabilities.

NOAA Coral Reef Watch

1998

NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch (CRW) is a decision support system providing resource managers, researchers, and other stakeholders with information on coral reef threats, primarily from climate change, to inform preparedness and response decisions. CRW uses remote sensing, modeled, and in situ biogeophysical data to offer near real-time and long-term monitoring, modeling, and reporting of conditions affecting coral reef ecosystems, especially related to coral bleaching. The information provided by the Coral Reef Watch program serves as an early warning system for coral reef changes as well as projected outlooks of coral bleaching heat stress.

This online database is a collaboration between the University of Oregon and several partners, including the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals and the USDA Forest Service. It contains a series of resources that can support adaptation planning and initiatives related to tribes, including a list of funding opportunities for tribes seeking to address climate change, as well as a list of tribal adaptation plans. It allows users to search for other important resources, including climate programs, tribal profiles, and disaster resources.

New York State Climate Smart Communities: Climate Smart Resiliency Planning Evaluation Tool

October 2014

Climate Smart Resiliency Planning is a non-regulatory self-assessment tool developed for local government decision makers in New York State to identify opportunities in municipal planning for climate change resilience. The tool is formatted as a “yes/no” questionnaire for local planners and managers to assess a community’s current plans, climate hazard risks, disaster preparedness, and public engagement. Results can be used to inform the development of integrated planning documents that incorporate adaptation strategies to address a community’s vulnerability to climate impacts such as flooding, storm surge, sea level rise, extreme heat, and drought.

Danish Road Directorate - Blue Spot Analysis

September 2014

The Danish Road Directorate (DRD) developed a Blue Spot Analysis to identify roadways vulnerable to flooding under present conditions and future climate projections and to inform its climate change adaptation response. A “Blue Spot” is a section of road where there is both a high risk of flooding and significant consequences from flooding. Road flooding is the primary climate adaptation challenge for Denmark and is the focus of the DRD’s climate adaptation planning.   The DRD’s strategy to adapt to road flooding is to manage flooding that occurs, improve roads when financially feasible, and to prevent climate-related impacts whenever possible.
