Developed by the Interdepartmental Climate Change Group of the South Florida Water Management District, this paper provides a high-level foundation for future discussions of the effects of global climate on water management planning and operations in South Florida. It focuses on the global concepts of climate change at the local level by providing an overview of how it may affect South Florida’s resources and the mission responsibilities of the South Florida Water Management District. The paper includes an initial vulnerability analysis of the potential impacts of climate change and sea level rise on water supply, flood control, coastal ecosystems, and regional water management infrastructure.

The Florida Oceans and Coastal Council prepared this report in 2009 to provide a foundation for future discussions of the effects of global climate change on Florida's ocean and coastal resources, and to inform Floridians about the current state of scientific knowledge regarding climate change. The report provides a high-level overview of the impacts to infrastructure, human health and the economy, as well as key drivers such as increasing air temperatures, warming ocean temperatures, and sea level rise.

This report presents a suite of federal, state and local policy actions to enhance the resilience of human and natural systems to the effects of climate change and variability for marine and coastal environments. Strategies discussed include: investments in habitat restoration, permitting decisions under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, the purchase of coastal lands, controls for reducing non-point and point source pollution upstream of intertidal estuaries, the inspection and prevention of invasive species, marine protected areas (MPAs), incentive‐based fishery management policies, and in general a better definition of rights to marine and coastal resources that creates stewardship incentives.

In June 2005, Executive Order S-05-05 was signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger which mandated the preparation of biennial science assessment reports on climate change impacts and adaptation options for California. The first Climate Action Team (CAT) Assessment Report was produced in March 2006. This 2009 assessment expands on the policy-oriented 2006 assessment, and provides new information and scientific findings including: 1) the development of new climate and sea-level projections using new information and tools that have become available in the last two years; and 2) an evaluation of climate change within the context of broader social changes, such as land-use changes and demographic shifts.

S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides an overview of climate change impacts on coastal areas and presents adaptation options relevant to various estuarine management goals, including: maintaining/restoring wetlands, maintaining sediment transport, preserving coastal land and development (including infrastructure, maintaining shorelines (hard and soft measures), managing invasive species, preserving habitat for vulnerable species, maintaining water quality, and maintaining water availability.

This report is one in a series of 21 Synthesis and Assessment Products (SAPs) produced between 2004 and 2009 by the U. S. Climate Change Science Program, aimed at providing current assessments of climate change science in the U. S. to inform public debate, policy, and operational decisions. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in collaboration with the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), collaborated on this report that discusses the impacts of sea-level rise on the physical characteristics of the coast, on coastal communities, and the habitats that depend on them in Mid-Atlantic coastal environments.

This report provides an assessment of the status of the coral reef ecosystems of Guam between 2004 and 2007. The findings of various monitoring activities, assessments, and stand-alone investigations conducted by local and federal agencies, educational/research institutions, and government contractors since 2004 were synthesized to obtain an updated, holistic view of the status of Guam’s reefs. Climate change is addressed as a significant factor in the decline of the coral reef in Guam.
'Climate Change, Coral Bleaching, and Ocean Acidification' is a sub-section of the report explaining that coral bleaching is an emerging threat, and will likely grow more severe with increasing sea surface temperatures associated with global climate change.

This report is one in a series of 21 SAPs produced between 2004 and 2009 by the U. S. Climate Change Science Program, aimed at providing current assessments of climate change science in the U. S. to inform public debate, policy, and operational decisions. This report considers progress in understanding four abrupt changes in the paleoclimatic record whose impacts are so rapid and large that they would pose clear risks to society if they were to recur: 1) rapid change in glaciers, ice sheets, and hence sea level; 2) widespread and sustained changes to the hydrologic cycle; 3) abrupt change in the northward flow of warm, salty water in the upper layers of the Atlantic Ocean associated with the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and southward flow of cold water in the deep Atlantic; and 4) rapid release to the atmosphere of methane trapped in permafrost and on continental margins.
