Led by San Francisco Planning and San Francisco Public Works, the Sea Level Rise Action Plan describes the objectives for future sea level rise and coastal flooding planning and mitigation in the City and County of San Francisco, California. The plan summarizes current climate science, relevant policies and regulations, and vulnerability and risk assessments conducted to date; provides a roadmap with both short-term and long-term sea level rise adaptation actions; and establishes a framework for further assessment, adaptation planning, and implementation.

California’s 2015 State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP 2015) is a comprehensive, statewide plan for conserving the state’s fish and wildlife and their natural habitats. The Plan identifies and prioritizes at-risk species and habitats across the state, and provides conservation strategies to help protect and conserve these species. The first update of California’s 2005 SWAP integrates climate change impacts and adaptation planning. The updated SWAP analyzes the impacts of climate change on ecosystems, uses climate change vulnerability as a criterion for the most vulnerable target species, and offers conservation strategies that address impacts of climate change.

Wetlands Watch, Hampton University, and Old Dominion University collaborated to develop flooding resiliency designs for Chesterfield Heights, a neighborhood in Norfolk, VA. The Norfolk region has been named the 10th most at risk from sea level rise of the world’s port cities by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. This design proposal emphasizes adaptation solutions that protect the region’s coastal ecosystems, as well as conducting flooding and sea level rise adaptation at the street and parcel level.

Louisiana’s Strategic Adaptations for Future Environment (LA SAFE) supplements Louisiana’s 2012 Coastal Master Plan by serving as a generalized framework for land use and community development along Louisiana’s coast. Recognizing that not all vulnerable areas can be protected from flood risks, the report outlines three different development strategies - Retreat, Retrofit, or Resettle. Based upon the expected flood inundation from a 100-year storm event over the next 50 years, the strategies respond to three typological zones:
Retreat from areas projected to experience more than 14 feet of flood inundation;
Retrofit places of economic and cultural value projected to experience between 3 and 14 feet of flood inundation; and
Resettle to maximize underdeveloped areas and high-ground corridors that are projected to experience less than 3 feet of flood inundation.

This document provides background information and guidance to Louisiana’s state and local governments on the retreat and resettlement process, and outlines the strategy for the ongoing resettlement of the Isle de Jean Charles Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw Native American community. As sea level rise and land loss threaten Louisiana’s low-lying regions, coastal communities must consider the costs and benefits of retreat and resettlement. The report provides a history of resettlement in the United States and makes the case that the resettlement of Isle de Jean Charles is just the beginning of more resettlement projects in the region.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, located at the southern tip of Assateague Island, depends on parking and road facilities that are vulnerable to flooding and erosion. Refuge managers have been exploring alternatives for responding to these impacts that they anticipate will worsen with sea-level rise and climate change. The refuge is studying alternatives to relocate parking facilities and is using oyster reefs to protect transportation facilities. Parking facilities on the island are made of loose shells and sand so as not to disrupt the natural terrain.
