Developed at the University of Southern Maine with funding from the EPA, the COAST program predicts damages from varying amounts of sea level rise (SLR) and storms of various intensities, and evaluates relative benefits and costs of response strategies. Although it is a technical tool, COAST can connect the technical with the social, political, and economic realities of local adaptation. Stakeholders are involved when they parametrize the model. Being entirely driven by the participants, the tool uses locally derived data on vulnerable assets such as real estate, economic activity, infrastructure, and natural resources.

This site provides the GIS data that was used for the study "State and Local Governments Plan for Development of Most Land Vulnerable to Rising Sea Level along the U. S. Atlantic Coast," published by James Titus. The GIS data are available in three formats: grid, polygon shape files, and vector shape files. This data identifies shoreline development and areas that will be vulnerable to sea level rise. .

This vulnerability assessment was developed by the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program and the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council. The report identifies the most significant vulnerabilities facing the Charlotte Harbor region related to drought, flood, hurricane severity, land area, habitats, biological cycles, and uncertainty in environmental models.

This issue brief discusses key elements of marine environment adaptation policy, including rights, resources, and governance. The brief recommends establishing better-defined rights and responsibilities for commercial and recreational fisheries in order to create an adaptation portfolio for marine and coastal resources. In addition, the report suggests establishing a broader ocean governance framework that includes comprehensive planning, allocation of dominant use zones and user rights within zones, and ecological standards.

With support from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), the Town of Bowers Beach is developing a Coastal Resiliency Action Plan to increase resiliency and reduce hazard vulnerability to the current and future effects of coastal storms and climate change. Bowers Beach currently experiences a number of coastal related problems including flooding of streets, episodic storm damage, coastal erosion, and other coastal hazard impacts.

The Recommended Sea Level Rise Scenarios were established by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) Sea Level Rise (SLR) Technical Workgroup to support the development of the DNREC Sea Level Rise Policy. The SLR Technical Workgroup is comprised of scientists from DNREC, University of Delaware, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary and the Center for the Inland Bays. The Workgroup determined the Delaware SLR scenarios by employing published expert summaries of existing data and predictions from national and international panels and federal agencies.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the International City/County Management Association, and Rhode Island Sea Grant, jointly released "Smart Growth for Coastal and Waterfront Communities," intended for planners, local government officials, developers, residents, and other stakeholders. Developed in consultation with the national Smart Growth Network, the interagency guide builds on the network's ten smart growth principles to create coastal and waterfront-specific strategies for development.

The Florida Oceans and Coastal Council prepared this report in 2009 to provide a foundation for future discussions of the effects of global climate change on Florida's ocean and coastal resources, and to inform Floridians about the current state of scientific knowledge regarding climate change. The report provides a high-level overview of the impacts to infrastructure, human health and the economy, as well as key drivers such as increasing air temperatures, warming ocean temperatures, and sea level rise.

An analysis of impacts to Corpus Christi, Texas was undertaken to help understand and quantify the potential impacts of global warming on coastal flooding and related damages. The city’s location on the Gulf of Mexico makes it particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. If sea-level rise projections and the hurricane intensification scenarios used in this analysis are realized, significant increases in flood levels are projected, especially under higher emissions scenarios. This is projected to lead to major economic consequences resulting from increased property damage and displacement of families and businesses.
