California Dept. of Fish and Game Climate Science Program

2008

The California Department of Fish and Game's (DFG’s) mission is 'to manage California’s diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and their use and enjoyment by the public. ' The Climate Science Program was created in 2008 as part of the Climate Science and Renewable Energy Branch to help the Department address climate change, in support of this mission. The Program is designed to minimize the negative effects of climate change through the development of adaptation and mitigation measures, policies, and practices that provide clear benefits to the state’s fish, wildlife, and terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

An Analysis of Climate Change Impacts and Options Relevant to the Department of the Interior's (DOI's) Managed Lands and Waters

2008

In March 2007, then Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne established the Department of the Interior (DOI) Climate Change Task Force. Three subcommittees were formed to undertake the assignment. This Draft report was issued by the Land & Water Management Subcommittee to identify potential issues and challenges facing the DOI as a consequence of climate change and to suggest possible options for addressing them.

An Integrated DOI Plan for Addressing the Effects of Climate Change on Natural Systems

2008

In March 2007, former Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne established the Department of the Interior (DOI) Climate Change Task Force. Three subcommittees were formed to undertake this assignment. This Draft report was issued by the Science Subcommittee to identify the science and information needed to assist the DOI in addressing the consequences of climate change and to suggest possible options for developing, coordinating, acquiring, and analyzing any additional scientific information that would be helpful for that purpose.

Climate Change 2007: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability - Contribution of Working Group II to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

2007

From the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II, this report summarizes the 2007 scientific understanding of the impacts of climate change on natural, managed, and human systems around the world, the capacity of these systems to adapt, and their vulnerability. It builds upon past IPCC assessments and incorporates new knowledge gained since the Third Assessment. Consistent with all IPCC reports, the WGII contribution to the Fourth Assessment Report is a comprehensive assessment of the peer-reviewed published literature and selected gray literature on climate change impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability.

Climate Change and Great Lakes Water Resources

November 2007

This report, by the National Wildlife Federation, explores impacts to the Great Lakes from climate change, including possible lowering of lake levels, impacts on fisheries and wildlife, changes in Great Lakes shorelines, and reduction of groundwater supplies. The report also focuses on policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to unavoidable impacts on water resources.

Sea-Level Rise and Coastal Habitats in the Pacific Northwest: An Analysis for Puget Sound, Southwestern Washington, and Northwestern Oregon

July 2007

This report, by the National Wildlife Federation, documents results from a study on the projected impacts of sea-level rise to key coastal habitats in the Pacific Northwest. The study modeled sea-level rise up to 2 meters, based on input from prior studies, and examined its effects including the inundation of estuarine beaches, loss of tidal flats and marshes, and the inundation of inland swamps. The report also provides a brief description of how these effects will impact wildlife. Finally, the report makes one broad recommendation for planners to account for sea-level rise in their habitat restoration projects.
