Ahead of the Storm: Preparing Toronto for Climate Change

April 18, 2008

The Toronto City Council unanimously approved a comprehensive strategy to respond to climate change, known as the "Climate Change, Clean Air and Sustainable Energy Action Plan" in 2007. The development and establishment of a climate change adaptation strategy is one of the actions contained in the Plan. As such, this report provides a framework designed to help members of the public and other stakeholders engage in the process of formulating and implementing a climate change adaptation strategy for Toronto.

ClimateLA (Los Angeles, California)

2008

ClimateLA is an implementation program for action items discussed in the GreenLA plan released by the City of Los Angeles in May 2007.  In May 2007, the City of Los Angeles, California published “Green LA: An Action Plan to Lead the Nation in Fighting Global Warming,” which included more than fifty specific climate mitigation actions designed to reduce the City’s contributions to climate change, and to prepare a response to the changes that have already begun to occur.

City of Chicago, Illinois Climate Action Plan (CCAP)

2008

The City of Chicago Climate Task Force developed this Climate Action Plan to address both mitigation and adaptation. The brief adaptation section of the plan discusses nine strategies including: heat management, innovative cooling, protect air quality, manage stormwater, implement green urban design, preserve plants and trees, engage the public, engage businesses, and plan for the future.

GreenLA: An Action Plan to Lead the Nation in Fighting Global Warming (Los Angeles, California)

GreenLA is the City of Los Angeles, California's climate action plan that was published in 2007. While focused on mitigation, the plan contains a short adaptation section that addresses disaster preparedness, water security, fire preparedness, reducing the heat island effect, and protecting public health in Loas Angeles.

King County, Washington Climate Plan 2007

February 2007

This 2007 report provides an overview of King County’s plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to anticipate and adapt to projected climate change impacts. Major accomplishments in 2007 include the development of a vulnerable facilities inventory for divisions responsible for long-term asset management, the adoption of the King County Flood Control Zone District, and discussions of how to prepare for intense storm events and identify flood system co-benefits for public health and environmental quality.

USACE Kivalina, Alaska Relocation Master Plan

June 2006

The purpose of this report in 2006 was to provide residents and stakeholders with the information necessary to make an informed decision regarding the best solution for the community of Kivalina facing the impacts of sea-level rise. This master plan from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) provides preliminary facility designs, costs, schedule, and a decision matrix for the community of Kivalina and its relocation stakeholders. The current state of the community is discussed in detail including the physical setting of the planning area, descriptions of 'living resources' such as endangered species and habitats, as well as the culture, history and demography of the community.
