Safeguarding California in Action provides an overview of the state agency action case studies that were included in the Safeguarding California Plan - the state's climate change adaptation plan. This supplementary document provides 33 examples of actions funded by the state, that state agencies are implementing to make communities, infrastructure, services, and the natural environment more resilient to climate change.

California’s Climate Adaptation Strategy 2018 Update describes the state’s progress in climate adaptation and presents an actionable plan for the near future. Building on the 2009 California Adaptation Strategy and the 2014 Safeguarding California Plan, the 2018 report is directed by Assembly Bill 1482 (2015-16) to update the state’s adaptation strategy every three years.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA's) Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Framework is a guide for use in analyzing the impacts of climate change and extreme weather on transportation infrastructure, assessing adaptation options, and modifying decisionmaking processes. The framework is designed to help identify key considerations, questions, and resources that can be used to develop and implement a climate change vulnerability assessment. The processes, lessons learned, and resources outlined in the framework are geared toward State departments of transportation (DOTs), metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), and other agencies involved in planning, building, or maintaining the transportation system.

Four Twenty Seven, in collaboration with Acclimatise and Climate Finance Advisers, published this guide to discuss the acute and chronic impacts of climate change on infrastructure, and the associated risks and liability for infrastructure investors. Once climate impacts and infrastructure resiliency are taken into account, loan and credit officers can structure lending that maximizes performance and minimizes risks. The guide includes ten “snapshots” or summaries of climate hazards and risks for the infrastructure sub-industries of: Airports; Marine Ports; Gas and Oil Transport and Storage; Power Transmission and Distribution; Wind-Based Power Distribution; Telecommunications; Data Centers; Commercial Real Estate; Healthcare; and Sport and Entertainment.

California Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 , was signed into law on April 28, 2017, to invest $54 billion over the next 10 years to repair roads, freeways and bridges in communities across California. The new SB 1 planning grant funds include $20 million over three years for Adaptation Planning Grants to local and regional agencies for climate change adaptation planning. $7 million dollars are available for the FY 2017-18 grant cycle.

In 2018, Seattle’s Office of Sustainability & Environment, in collaboration with the Office of Planning and Community Development, released the Duwamish Valley Action Plan. The Plan lays out a variety of different strategies and projects that should be implemented in the South Park and Georgetown neighborhoods of Seattle. The Plan itself is grounded in equity considerations and environmental justice principles, which results in recommendations that will benefit the communities most affected by the impacts of climate change and systematic racism. The published document is a result of the input of over 500 stakeholders within the Duwamish Valley Region – outreach that began very early in the creation of the report and its recommendations and continued throughout its development. The Action Plan breaks down its projects and proposals into facilitating the development of seven different priority areas: healthy environment; parks and open spaces; community capacity; mobility and transportation; economic opportunity and jobs; affordable housing; and public safety. Within each priority area chapter, there are detailed near-term accomplishments, actions, or projects, and opportunities that, if implemented, will go towards achieving the area-specific goals laid out at the beginning of each chapter. Included among these plans are projects that enhance the natural resilience of these communities, such as tree planting, the development of rain gardens, building more open spaces, and more.

New Hampshire’s Department of Environmental Services administers the Climate Risk in the Seacoast (C-RiSe) project which is intended to provide municipalities along the Great Bay with the resources they need to assess sea level rise and storm surge flooding. The Great Bay communities that have been assessed include: Rollinsford, Dover, Madbury, Durham, Newmarket, Newfields, Exeter, Stratham, Greenland, and Newington. This project is funded through the Coastal Zone Management Act by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) vulnerability assessment of California’s District 4 (9 San Francisco Bay area counties) is a result of the 2013 CalTrans report on the department’s activities and plans to address and adapt the sector to climate change. The vulnerability assessment summary report describes the impacts of climate change on California’s Highway System in District 4, and a companion Technical Report describes the processes used to identify these impacts.

The Transit Cooperative Research Program of the Transportation Research Board published a volume of three reports, titled “Improving the Resilience of Transit Systems Threatened by Natural Disasters. ” Volume 1 is a Guide, Volume 2 is a Research Overview, and Volume 3 contains Literature Reviews and Case Studies. As climate exacerbated extreme weather events and natural disasters threaten operations and transportation assets, the Guide focuses on how to create resilient transit systems of all sizes.

The California Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR) developed this guidance document to support state agency planning and investment in the context of climate change - as directed by Executive Order B-30-15. The guidance provides state agencies with a process for determining how to integrate climate considerations into state planning and investment decisions. The guidance offers an introduction to climate risks and how to start incorporating them; some common analytical practices; and principles to guide decision making around climate adaptation, community resilience, and social equity.
