Greenworks Philadelphia is a comprehensive six-year plan (“Plan”) that sets goals for “greening” the City of Philadelphia – increasing the city’s energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving the environmental quality of the city, and adapting to the dangers posed by climate change. This case study focuses only on the transportation-related recommendations included in the Plan – increasing the percentage of city assets in a “state of good repair” and using green infrastructure strategies to improve stormwater management and reduce flood impacts to transportation infrastructure.

The purpose of this report is to highlight climatic changes that have already occurred and impacts that are happening in Califormia now, affecting public health, natural systems, and the economy. Chapter 3 provides evidence attributing past and current observations of climate change to direct human causes, such as emissions of greenhouse gases. Chapter 4 examines California’s climate under different emissions scenarios, including a scenario of drastically reduced emissions, and summarizes the most current scientific understanding of the influence of future climate change on California’s economy and ecosystems.

This paper presents advances in climate projection information that the California Department of Water Resources has made since their 2006 report, "Progress on Incorporating Climate Change into Management of California's Water Resources. " These advances include an improved understanding of how well selected climate models represent historical climate conditions and refined methodologies for representing stream flows, outdoor urban and agricultural water demands, and sea-level rise in planning tools, in order to assess their usefulness in decision making for water resource managers.

In this resolution, passed April 23, 2009, the Maine legislature directed its Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to create a stakeholder group with the purpose of evaluating the measures available to non-governmental organizations, state agencies, and the business community to prepare for and adapt to the most likely impacts of climate change. The DEP is directed to plan for the issues raised in the 2009 climate impact assessment, including considering ways to create a hospitable landscape for the development of greenhouse gas offset projects and emission technologies.

On Earth Day 2009, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) adopted its first Sustainability Policy, forming the foundation of DWR’s many “greening” activities. This policy outlines the business objectives and actions of making sustainability a criterion in decision-making processes. The policy articulates the goals and directions being taken to be a sustainability leader within State government and the California water community, better stewards of the environment, and to provide cost savings to the State taxpayers through reduced operating costs.

This report was designed to help the City of Los Angeles use low impact development (LID) techniques to address water quality, flood control, and climate change issues. LID is a strategy for managing stormwater runoff that uses natural drainage features to capture and filter urban runoff. From an environmental standpoint, LID reduces water pollution, replenishes aquifers, and encourages water reuse. From an adaptation standpoint, LID reduces stress on water supply and can provide shade trees, helping to reduce urban heat islands.

A collaborative effort of the Bureau of Reclamation, USGS, USACE, and the California Dept. of Water Resources, this paper presents a flexible methodology for conducting climate change risk assessments involving reservoir operations. The risk-based framework described in this paper provides a new context for climate change assessments. It is a flexible framework that advances methods for assessing scenario-impacts and/or characterizing uncertainties about projection scenarios or associated impacts.

In late 2007, then Governor Baldacci asked the University of Maine and its Climate Change Institute to lead a preliminary analysis of the effects of climate change in Maine during the 21st century. This report from the analysis considers past climate change, recent evidence of accelerated rates of change, and the implications of continued climate change in Maine as a result of greenhouse gas emissions and their associated pollutants. The assessment highlights some of the critical climate impacts on various ecosystems and economic sectors in Maine, with the intention to help frame the policy and management discussions on adaptation that are needed, while emphasizing new opportunities that exist for the state.
