This report is one in a series of 21 Synthesis and Assessment Products (SAPs) produced between 2004 and 2009, aimed at providing current assessments of climate change science in the U. S. to inform public debate, policy, and operational decisions. This SAP focuses on impacts of global climate change on human health, human settlements, and human welfare. The assessment examines potential impacts of climate change on human society, opportunities for adaptation, and associated recommendations for addressing data gaps and near- and long-term research goals.

Developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this national strategy describes over 40 specific actions the National Water Program intends to take to adapt program implementation to regard climate change. Goals for the Program are outlined in five areas: greenhouse gas mitigation, climate change adaptation, climate change research related to water, water program education, and water program management. Each of these five goals is supported by a series of objectives and actions that the National Water Program will implement in cooperation with partners.

This comprehensive climate change impact assessment was developed to support adaptation planning in the state of Maryland. It was prepared by a Scientific and Technical Working Group, by leading experts in the state in climate change and its impacts, including experts from the University of Maryland. This assessment informed development of the state's Phase II Adaptation Strategy, A Comprehensive Strategy for Reducing Maryland's Vulnerability to Climate Change.

The study focused on city infrastructure, key departments, and budgets of the city of Chicago. The analysis was designed to assist city leadership in adaptation and mitigation planning.

King County's Wastewater Treatment Division maintains 77 major facilities, 40 of which are situated adjacent to tidally-influenced water bodies. As effects of climate change continue to grow, the potential for flooding at these facilities as the result of sea-level rise must be assessed and mitigated. The first step in planning for the effects of sea-level rise is to identify which facilities are at risk. This report identifies these facilities and their potential for flooding, considering the effects of both sea-level rise and storm surges, and then recommends the next steps in planning for this change.

It describes potential impacts of climate change, risks and opportunities for business, and why business should consider adaptation planning and measures. The report also summarizes intergovernmental efforts to promote adaptation in vulnerable regions and highlights areas in which business could have a role in promoting adaptation, both at community and global levels.
