Options for Improving Climate Modeling to Assist Water Utility Planning for Climate Change

December 2009

This report, which was commissioned by the Water Utility Climate Alliance (WUCA), considers how federal investments in the science of climate change, and in particular climate modeling, can best be directed to help improve the quality of  research so that it may be more useful to water utilities and other possible users in adapting to climate change.   It explains how climate models work, describes how some WUCA members have used climate models and downscaling to assess impacts on their systems and develop adaptation options, and makes seven initial recommendations for how climate modeling and downscaling techniques can be improved so that these tools and techniques can be more useful for the water sector.

Using Future Climate Projections to Support Water Resources Decision Making in California

May 2009

This paper presents advances in climate projection information that the California Department of Water Resources has made since their 2006 report, "Progress on Incorporating Climate Change into Management of California's Water Resources. " These advances include an improved understanding of how well selected climate models represent historical climate conditions and refined methodologies for representing stream flows, outdoor urban and agricultural water demands, and sea-level rise in planning tools, in order to assess their usefulness in decision making for water resource managers.

The Impacts of Sea-Level Rise on the California Coast

May 2009

Provided by the California Energy Commission's Climate Change Center, this study includes a detailed analysis of California's infrastructure, property, and current population at risk from projected sea-level rise, as well as the cost of building structural measures to reduce that risk. Specifically, it identifies the risks of flooding and erosion to specific populations, roads, railways, power plants, water treatment plants, ports and airports, emergency and healthcare facilities, wetlands, coastal and San Francisco Bay properties, and groundwater aquifers.

Implications of 21st Century Climate Change for the Hydrology of Washington State

2009

This report is part 1 of Chapter 3 of the Washington Climate Change Impacts Assessment (see separate entry), focusing on water resource impacts for the state. Parts 2 and 3 of this chapter focus on the Puget Sound and the Yakima River Basin respectively. Based on results from 39 global simulations performed for the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR4) projections, this report presents downscaled model findings and the implications on the hydrology of the Pacific Northwest.

San Francisco Bay Scenarios for Sea Level Rise Index Map

Using 2008 inundation data (Knowles), and 2005 aeriel imagery data (NAIP), the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission produced these maps for areas on the San Francisco Bay that will be affected by sea level rise over the next century. The maps are generated that assume 16 inches of sea level rise by mid-century and that assume 55 inches by 2100. .

Climate Change in Colorado: A Synthesis to Support Water Resources Management and Adaptation

2008

This report is a synthesis of climate change science that is important for evaluating impacts on Colorado's water resources. This document provides scientific analyses to support state and regional efforts to develop a water adaptation plan, while presenting scientific analyses on observed trends, modeling, and projections of hydro-climatic variables - including temperature, precipitation, snowmelt, and runoff. This analysis includes a record of Colorado climate that covers trends in temperature, precipitation, snow and stream flow; a section describing climate models, emissions scenarios, and downscaling; followed by climate attributions, projections, and implications for the state.

Climate Change 2007: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability - Contribution of Working Group II to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

2007

This report summarizes current scientific understanding of the impacts of climate change on natural, managed, and human systems around the world, the capacity of these systems to adapt, and their vulnerability. It builds upon past IPCC assessments and incorporates new knowledge gained since the Third Assessment. Consistent with all IPCC reports, the WGII contribution to the Fourth Assessment Report is a comprehensive assessment of the peer-reviewed published literature and selected gray literature on climate change impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) WaterAlert service sends e-mail or text messages when certain parameters within surface water, groundwater, water quality, and precipitation categories, as measured by a USGS real-time data-collection station, exceed user-definable thresholds.

The Resilient Lands and Waters Initiative Final Report

November 17, 2016

A Resilient Lands and Waters Initiative Final Report and companion website highlight the efforts of seven partnerships across the U. S. to build resilience of natural resources and to increase climate resilience at the landscape scale. These partnerships use existing collaborative, regional approaches to address climate change and to identify priority areas for conservation, restoration, and management actions.  At each location, Federal agencies work closely with state, tribal, and local partners to prepare for and prevent climate impacts, and ensure that long-term conservation efforts take climate change into account.
