ClimateCARE Resiliency Work Plan

September 28, 2016

This proposal, which was funded in 2016, maps out the Neighborhood of Affordable Housing, Inc. (NOAH)’s Climate: Community Action for Resilience through Engagement (ClimateCARE) program in East Boston. ClimateCARE seeks to a) strengthen community engagement, b) partner with the City of Boston to advance its Climate Action Plan, and c) convene agency stakeholders in an Adaptation Planning Working Group which will facilitate coordinated, actionable climate resilience plans. In addition to detailing these initiatives, the report describes the climate-related risks in East Boston and their workplan for 2016-2018.

King County, Washington Equity and Social Justice Strategic Plan

September 13, 2016

The King County, Washington Equity and Social Justice Strategic Plan provides the county’s blueprint and shared vision for addressing environmental justice, advancing equity, and fostering resiliency. The Plan was developed through a diverse and inclusive community engagement process including more than 600 county employees and 100 local organizations.   The Plan sets a pro-equity agenda for expanding access and addressing the following determinants of equity: child and youth development, economic development and jobs, environment and climate, health and human services, housing, information and technology, the justice system, and transportation and mobility.

Case Study of Efforts to Promote Resilient Affordable Housing in New Orleans

2016

The City of New Orleans is prioritizing efforts to provide safe, affordable housing as part of its resilience strategy.  In June 2016, the City released its Housing for a Resilient New Orleans: Five-Year Strategy, that lays out the City's approach for protecting and enhancing safe and affordable housing as the City continues to rebound from Katrina and other hurricanes.  Although the Strategy does not explicitly address climate change, it does talk about the resilience challenges posed by the lack of safe and affordable housing and it discusses the city's plan for preserving and enhancing existing affordable housing and building new housing.

Next Generation - New York City Housing Authority Sustainability Agenda

This report outlines New York City’s Housing Authority (NYCHA) plan to support safe, clean, and connected communities that reverse the downward spiral of disinvestment. The plan specifically includes climate change as a risk to the community, public health, and public housing - noting that if Hurricane Sandy is predictive, climate will disproportionately impact low-income people and public housing residents.

Tidewater Rising Resiliency Design Challenge

January 2016

Wetlands Watch, Hampton University, and Old Dominion University collaborated to develop flooding resiliency designs for Chesterfield Heights, a neighborhood in Norfolk, VA. The Norfolk region has been named the 10th most at risk from sea level rise of the world’s port cities by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. This design proposal emphasizes adaptation solutions that protect the region’s coastal ecosystems, as well as conducting flooding and sea level rise adaptation at the street and parcel level.

San Diego, California Climate Action Plan

December 2015

The City of San Diego, California Climate Action Plan is a strategy to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets, and to achieve resiliency to climate change impacts. The CAP provides strategies for the City to collaborate with communities in assessing vulnerability to future climate change, developing overarching adaptation strategies and implementing measures to enhance resilience.  A chapter dedicated to climate change adaptation identifies climate impacts for San Diego, illustrates current climate adaptation efforts throughout the state, and provides a guide to adaptation and resiliency strategy development.

King County Strategic Climate Action Plan - 2015 Update

November 2015

In November 2015 King County, Washington adopted an update to their Strategic Climate Action Plan, which includes the county's plans for both reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for climate change impacts.  Section 2 describes the county's adaptation plans for 12 focus areas: built environment (wastewater, roads and bridges, airport, county buildings and facilities) and planning and regional services (regional planning, public health, stormwater, floodplains, salmon recovery and rural programs, public transportation, environmental science and monitoring, and emergency management).
