Case Study: City of Portland, Oregon Ecoroof Incentive

In 2008, The City of Portland Oregon adopted an Ecoroof Incentive program to address the city's stormwater management problems and the incentive program was active through 2012. The program provided an incentive for the installation of green roofs and other innovative roofing methods to better manage stormwater runoff. Green roofs have the potential to help mitigate both the urban heat island effect, increase the energy efficiency of buildings, and manage stormwater.

Harlem Heat Project, New York City

2016

The Harlem Heat Project is a community-based initiative that began in New York City in the summer of 2016. It combines crowd-sourcing, data reporting, and narrative journalism to tell the story or urban heat islands in New York City. Non-profit journalism and community-based organizations came together to provide low-cost heat sensors to homeowners in "heat-vulnerable" areas of Harlem in New York City. The data was used to tell the story of disproportionate risks to extreme heat for lower-income and communities of color as a result of increasing temperatures from climate change.

Case Study: Scottsdale, Arizona’s Cool Roofs Workshop

In 2015, the City of Scottsdale, Arizona hosted a Cool Roof workshop series, to promote the use of cool roofs as a strategy for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings and reducing urban heat islands.  Cool roofs are designed to reflect sunlight and heat away from a building, reducing roof temperatures and urban heat islands. Cool roofs also reduce energy use, ambient air temperature, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and improve human health and comfort. A Resilient Power Capital Scan: How Foundations Could Use Grants and Investments to Advance Solar and Storage in Low-Income Communities

Climate Change Adaptation Demonstration: Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Twentymile Creek and Marengo River Watersheds

2012 - 2017

An adaptation demonstration project was undertaken by the US Forest Service’s Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIAC), the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF), and the Shared Landscapes Initiative, which included several watershed restoration activities underway in northern Wisconsin. The applied adaptation and restoration measures are being evaluated for their ability to increase watershed resilience to changing conditions due to climate.

Case Study: Boulder, Colorado’s Home Preparedness Assessment Program

2017

In early 2017, the City of Boulder and Boulder County used Community Development Block Grant for Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding to launch a pilot home resilience retrofit program called the Home Preparedness Assessment program (HPA). HPA was open to city and county single-family and mobile-family homeowners impacted by floods that swept through the Boulder region in the fall of 2013. While the program primarily addressed flooding risks in homes, the program coordinators used the home assessments to have broader conversations with homeowners about other natural disaster risks and resilience.

The Kresge Foundation Climate Resilient and Equitable Water Systems (CREWS) Initiative

2017

Climate Resilient and Equitable Water Systems (CREWS) consists of 24 nonprofits - Kresge Foundation grantees - who are building solutions for low-income communities in U. S. cities to adapt to climate enhanced storm and flood impacts. CREWS programs are transforming urban stormwater and wastewater systems with climate resilient integrated water-management practices and socially equitable solutions. CREWS is an initiative of the Kresge Foundation’s Environment Program, focused on climate resilience through adaptation, mitigation, and social justice.
