The Community Change Grant Equitable Resilience technical assistance program, an initiative spearheaded by the U.S. the Environmental Protection Agency, will provide free assistance to entities applying for Community Change Grants. EPA plans to offer this technical assistance to up to 50 Community Change Grants applicants. The program will provide free project development assistance, community engagement, and partnership development workshops.

The Nature-Based Solutions Resource Guide 2. 0, released by the White House in December of 2023, aims to encourage implementation and awareness of nature-based solutions employed by federal agencies and partners. The Guide defines nature-based solutions as “actions to protect, sustainably manage, or restore natural or modified ecosystems to address societal challenges, simultaneously providing benefits for people and the environment. ” Nature-based solutions can be used to provide a wide range of benefits, such as supporting wildlife, reducing heat stress, reducing future disaster risk, and overcoming environmental injustices.

The Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grant program (Community Change Grants) funds community-driven projects that increase community climate resilience, reduce pollution, and strengthen communities. This grant operates under the framework of the broader Environmental and Climate Justice Program (ECJP), which was created by the Inflation Reduction Act and is now contained in Section 138 of the Clean Air Act (CAA), 42 U. On May 10, 2023, the State of Washington updated its existing wildfire prevention regime by passing HB 1578, the Cascading Impacts of Wildfires Act, intended to improve community preparedness, response, recovery, and resilience to wildfires. HB 1578 was passed with consideration of the impacts of climate change on the forestry surrounding Western Washington, where there is considerable population growth. Additionally, the Washington Legislature concluded that the effects of wildfire smoke are hazardous, and it is consistent with the state’s environmental justice goals to protect public health through a wildfire prevention strategy.

The TerrAdapt:Cascadia tool, founded by a team of practitioners and scientists, is a visualization tool for monitoring habitats and habitat connectivity across the Cascadia region, which covers Washington and portions of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and British Columbia. The tool projects habitat and ecosystem scenarios utilizing climate and land-use data, and can help users prioritize conservation practices in at-risk areas. In partnership with Cascadia Partners Forum and other regional users, the non-profit TerrAdapt.

Signed into law by President Biden in December of 2022, the Disaster Resiliency Planning Act (Public Law No. 117-221) requires the Office of Management and Budget to develop guidance “requiring the head of each agency to incorporate natural disaster resilience into real property asset management and investment decisions made by the agency. ” The legislation was authored by U. S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and U. S. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL).

Greauxing Resilience at Home: A Regional Vision is an innovative legal, planning, and policy resource to promote community resilience through housing and nature-based solutions in places where flooding, extreme weather events, and other factors are driving population changes and transitions. It was developed by Capital Region Planning Commission and Georgetown Climate Center, in collaboration with policymakers, community members, and other stakeholders in Region Seven of the Louisiana Watershed Initiative located in southeast Louisiana.
