The Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) 2010 Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) is hosted on a comprehensive website which includes other information regarding local hazard mitigation planning; interactive maps showing areas at risk due to events such as flooding, wildfire, and landslides; and strategic priorities and actions submitted by individual agencies participating in the Mitigation Plan. The plan itself identifies natural hazards with the greatest impact to the San Francisco Bay Area of California including climate change, flooding, landslides, wildfires and drought.

This report, from the World Bank and the United Nations, examines the steps that national governments and individuals can take to mitigate the damage of extreme weather events, such as earthquakes, droughts, floods, and storms. The report is the culmination of a two-year effort by 70 experts from various disciplines and institutions, primarily economists but also climate scientists, geographers, political scientists, and psychologists.

According to the authors, this article focuses on "the use of law to foster and to remove impediments to adaptation," and provides suggestions that are intended to further the City’s planning process, as well as represent areas of possible consideration for other municipalities.

The urban forest, as described in the plan, is essential to creating a sustainable city because it solves many problems with one single solution.
