This white paper from the California Energy Commission's California Climate Change Center, examines five case studies from the San Francisco Bay region (Hayward, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Marin Counties, and the regional adaptation process) to identify the ongoing adaptation processes, the climate adaptation barriers encountered by local government entities, and further develop a diagnostic framework for managing these barriers. Relevant data were collected through key informant interviews, public documents, observation of and/or participation in public meetings, and a statewide survey.

Delaware’s Sea Level Rise Advisory Committee (SLRAC) was established by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), to help the state plan for sea level rise. The SLRAC is assessing Delaware’s vulnerability to current and future inundation problems that may be exacerbated by sea level rise. Their goal is to develop a set of recommendations for state agencies, local governments, businesses, and citizens to enable them to adapt programs, policies, business practices and make informed decisions.

The City of Austin, Texas adopted the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan in 2012 and established “sustainability” as the central policy direction of the 30-year plan. Austin recognizes the impacts of climate change, and has incorporated broad climate adaptation planning goals along with many other sustainability, conservation, and green infrastructure focused strategies into this plan.

This report shares the results of a new study from the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Emmett Center on Climate Change and the Environment at UCLA School of Law, on the many benefits of green roofs and cool roofs for communities in southern California. Some of those benefits are quantified, including building cooling energy savings, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and, for green roofs, stormwater volume reduction. Policy recommendations to achieve these benefits are provided as well.

In 2012, this All Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted by the City of Milwaukee in compliance with requirements of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Although the plan does not have in-depth treatment of climate change, it does acknowledge that future planning should utilize estimates of how climate change will effect precipitation in the region (at p. 63).

Louisiana's 2012 Coastal Master Plan, also titled 'Louisiana's Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast,' is a landmark 50-year, $50 billion blueprint for a sustainable coast. This plan, prepared by the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA), was passed unanimously by the Louisiana legislature in May 2012. While building off previous plans, the 2012 Coastal Master Plan is the most comprehensive to date, offering solutions to Louisiana’s coastal environmental and engineering challenges.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has utilized water availability models to project local-level climate change impacts in 14 water basins. To determine the sensitivity and potential effect of long-term climate change on the freshwater resources of the U. S. , the USGS Global Change study, “An integrated watershed scale response to global change in selected basins across the United States” was started in 2008 and published its results in 2012. The long-term goal of this study is to provide the foundation for hydrologically based climate change studies across the nation.

The resource provides streamflow and water supply data for 195 sites in the Western United States in the form of an interactive map. These data are based on hydrologic projections at a 12 kilometer resolution covering western states. High-resolution climate/hydrologic variations and changes are depicted through global climate simulations and then downscaled. Projections for each site run from the year 1950 through 2099.
