Charles River Watershed Association Green Infrastructure Demonstration Projects

The Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA), through its “Blue Cities Initiative,” develops demonstration projects that feature green infrastructure along streets and in other public and private spaces, with the goal of managing increases in precipitation caused by climate change. More frequent and intense rainfall events will increase the risks of flooding, sewer overflows, and water pollution in the Northeast. CRWA has implemented demonstration projects in the Boston metropolitan area to illustrate and assess the effectiveness of different green stormwater management techniques, including permeable pavements and roadside vegetation, and to encourage replication of these strategies in other areas.

EPA National Lakes Assessment

2012

During the summer of 2012, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), states, tribes and other partners conducted the second nationwide survey of the condition of the nation’s lakes. Designed to estimate the percentage of lakes that are in good, fair, or poor condition, the National Lakes Assessment (NLA) serves as a scientific report card on America’s lakes. It examines ecological, water quality, and recreational indicators, and assesses how widespread key stressors (such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and acidification) are across the country.

Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT)

2012

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a public domain model jointly developed by USDA Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) and Texas A&M AgriLife Research, part of the Texas A&M University System. SWAT is a small watershed to river basin-scale model to simulate the quality and quantity of surface and ground water and predict the environmental impact of land use, land management practices, and climate change.

Climate Vulnerability Monitor

2012

The Climate Vulnerability Monitor (2nd Ed. ) measures the global impact of climate change and the carbon economy at a national level. It calculates and compares the vulnerability for 184 countries in four areas of impact (environmental disasters, habitat change, health impact and industry stress) using 34 climate and carbon related indicators. The report is the second to be issued by an ongoing international research program on climate-related vulnerability mandated to the independent humanitarian and development research organization, DARA.

EPA Urban Waters Small Grants

2012

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Urban Waters Program is a potential source of funding for green infrastructure and other resilience projects that highlight equity and environmental justice. The program offers small grants (up to $60,000) for water projects that encourage the growth of local business, promote public education, or otherwise create recreational, social, and employment opportunities in local communities. Since its inception in 2012 the program has provided $6.6 million in funding to 114 organizations across the U.S. and in Puerto Rico. Through this program, underserved communities can access healthy waters; helping grow local businesses and enhancing educational and social opportunities.

Nez Perce Tribe Clearwater River Subbasin Climate Change Adaptation Plan

December 30, 2011

The Nez Perce Tribe Water Resources Division (NPTWRD) developed this adaptation plan to increase awareness around climate change issues in the Clearwater River Subbasin. Home to the Nez Perce,  the Subbasin covers just over 9,000 square miles in Idaho that includes a mix of federal, state, tribal and privately-owned land. Historically hunter-gatherers, the Tribe’s connection to the land is reflected today through dependence on industries such as agriculture, timber production, and tourism and recreation.

City of Santa Cruz, California Climate Adaptation Plan

December 13, 2011

The City of Santa Cruz, California is uniquely situated along the Pacific Ocean cliffs and Monterey Bay beaches, surrounded by a greenbelt of open space areas, with a river running through its downtown and tourist-serving areas. Although all of this is a part of its appeal, these features also increase its vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. The Climate Change Adaptation Plan (CCAP) was approved in December of 2011, identifying the City's most significant potential climate change risks and vulnerabilities, defining the actions to guide current and future adaptation planning, and overall creating a framework for decision makers to build a more resilient and sustainable community, informed by the most current climate science.

San Mateo County, California Climate Action Plan - Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment

December 2011

The San Mateo County vulnerability assessment was conducted as a collaborative effort between ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, PMC, San Mateo County’s Planning and Building Department as well as the San Mateo County Vulnerability Assessment Working Group. This assessment addresses the impacts of climate change on public health, water supply, and agriculture (including farms and managed timber) due to temperature and precipitation changes; wildfires; and the impacts of sea level rise on built infrastructure and ecosystems.

Coastal Storm Surge Scenarios for Water Utilities

December 2011

The Coastal Storm Surge Scenarios for Water Utilities, created by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), provides a visual representation using a map interface of hurricane strike frequency and worst-case coastal storm surge inundation scenarios (Storm surge inundation refers to the abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tides). This map aims to illuminate historical trends in coastal storm surges and flooding, in order to aid decision-makers tasked with improving coastal resiliency and emergency preparedness.

Analysis of Drought Impacts on Electricity Production in the Western and Texas Interconnections of the United States

December 2011

This study, produced by the Environmental Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory, analyzes the potential impact of drought on electricity generation within the western and Texas interconnections.  The report examines how electricity generation relies heavily on water resources and their availability, and illustrates the interdependence of energy and water in the electricity context.
