A series of white papers have been prepared by the State University System (SUS) of Florida Universities regarding realized and predicted climate change impacts, with this report specifically addressing water resources and adaptation issues across Florida. The primary objectives of this report are: (1) to identify Florida’s water resources and water-related infrastructure that are vulnerable to climate change; (2) show demographics in the state that are vulnerable to climate change impacts with a focus on water resources and sea level rise; and (3) highlight some of the alternative technologies currently being used to solve water resource supply issues in the state that are likely to expand and be challenged under various scenarios of climate change.

This paper discusses the role of irrigated agriculture in the western United States. Climate change in the west is expected to result in a more arid climate and therefore strain the already extended water uses in the region. Because of climate change and other factors, the report suggests that all water uses, including long-standing agricultural water rights, need to be re-examined. The author questions the region’s continued use of most of its water for irrigation, and the appropriate role of federal and state policy makers in responding to this environmental challenge.

Developed cooperatively by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, Resources Legacy Fund, and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, this handbook provides a framework for integrating the impacts of climate change into water resources management. Key decisions, resources, tools, and planning options are presented to guide resource managers and planners as they develop means of adapting their programs to a changing climate. The handbook uses CA DWR's Integrated Regional Water Management (IRWM) planning framework as a model into which analysis of climate change impacts and planning for adaptation and mitigation can be integrated at a regional scale.

This assessment summarizes the current and anticipated climate impacts on Missoula County, Montana, and offers strategic recommendations in five focal areas including: water supply, wildfire, flooding and water quality, changes to species and habitats, and the local impacts of global change. The report is a result of a community-based process in which residents and cross-sector leaders of Missoula County convened over local climate impacts and solutions. The assessment also includes a comprehensive review of Missoula County’s socioeconomic systems and vulnerabilities to climate change.

From the Security and Sustainability Forum, the 'Adaptations to Protect Security in a Changing Climate Series' is a five part webinar series, each a 90-minute live session featuring a panel of experts. The first session, 'Adaptation and Security in a Changing Climate', sets the stage with a discussion of how climate-impacts are determined and what types of adaptations must be incorporated into planning at the national, regional, and local levels. The series continues with Session 2: Food and Water Adaptations to Protect Security in a Changing Climate; Session 3: Infrastructure Adaptations in a Changing Climate; Session 4: Public Health Adaptations; and Session 5: Economic Vitality in a Changing Climate.

Prepared for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), this state-level assessment provides information on New York's vulnerability to climate change and is specifically designed to assist in the development of adaptation strategies. The Integrated Assessment for Effective Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in New York State (also known as "ClimAID") provides information on climate change impacts and adaptation options for eight sectors in New York including water resources, coastal zones, ecosystems, agriculture, energy, transportation, public health and telecommunications.

This publication identifies a set of common principles for climate-adaptive institutions, specifically for water management. It was originally inspired by a session organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), International Union for Conservation of Nature and Conservation International at the 2010 Stockholm World Water Week. This report is a provides operational guidance on how to make water management institutions more climate-adaptive. Although the climate debate is often centered on temperature, water is what will determine whether a community (a village, city, or region) or ecosystem can survive - according to the report.

From the Georgetown Climate Center, this report contains two case studies from the Western United States that explore water shortages in the West, water rights along the Colorado River, and the protection of an endangered ground-dwelling bird: the greater sage grouse. In October 2009, President Obama signed Executive Order 13514, Federal Leadership in Environmental and Energy Performance, which sets sustainability goals for Federal agencies and focuses on making improvements in agency environmental, energy, and economic performance. The Executive Order charged the Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force with providing recommendations on how Federal policies, programs, and planning efforts can better prepare the United States for climate change. In October 2010, the Task Force recommended a set of policy goals and actions in its Progress Report to the President.

This project was performed to create a toolbox of options that southeast Florida utilities could pursue to meet water management needs, as well as the toolbox may have wider application to other coastal communities. This paper creates the connection between sustainable water supplies and Everglades restoration, outlines potential effects of sea level rise scenarios for coastal southeast Florida, and provides the toolbox of adaptation options for water, wastewater, and stormwater utilities. Also included are milestones to trigger infrastructure investments, as climate changes may occur more rapidly or more slowly than currently projected.
