The USACE (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) climate and global change adaptation goal is 'to develop practical, nationally consistent and regionally tailored, legally justifiable and cost-effective adaptation measures, both structural and nonstructural, that will reduce vulnerabilities and improve resilience to climate changes'.

The City of Alexandria released its Energy and Climate Change Action Plan 2012 – 2020 (ECCAP) in March 2011. The plan builds on the existing Eco-City Charter and Environmental Action Plan 2030 (EAP) by providing information on policies and measures that the City is already undertaking, as well as possible new short-term and medium-term measures to achieve the EAP’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, and identifies measures for adapting to the impacts of climate change. The adaptation strategies evaluated include measures to reduce the potential impacts of rising sea level and flooding in Alexandria, reducing water demand and increasing water conservation, reduce impacts of extreme heat events, and mitigating damage to natural ecosystems.

Green City, Clean Waters is the Philadelphia Water Department's vision for protecting and enhancing local watersheds by managing stormwater with innovative green infrastructure, through its combined sewer overflow control program. The program is pioneering a broad multi-decade investment in green stormwater management practices that reduce sewer overflows to the City’s waterways, and in turn, enhances communities and the overall urban environment.

The City of Lewes, Delaware, in conjunction with Delaware Sea Grant and ICLEI ‐ Local Governments for Sustainability, initiated the pilot project 'Mitigation and Adaptation to Natural Hazards and Climate Change - Planning and Building Resilient Coastal Communities' (Hazard Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Pilot Project). The overall goal of the project was to further the City’s hazard mitigation work by incorporating climate change and adaptive responses. The project team developed this action plan that aims to improve community sustainability and resilience.

In 2010, the City of Chula Vista's Climate Change Working Group (CCWG) evaluated the potential impacts from climate change on municipal infrastructure and services, and recommended strategies to adapt to these potential impacts. In October 2010, the CCWG presented 11 recommended Climate Adaptation Strategies (see Appendix A) to the City Council to address climate change vulnerabilities and solutions related to energy and water supplies, public health, wildfires, biodiversity, coastal resources, and the local economy.

The report summarizes the challenges faced by EPA in protecting America's water resources, including threats to human and aquatic ecosystem health, climate change impacts, infrastructure needs, and population increase. The strategy outlines the challenges that were discussed at the 2010 Coming Together for Clean Water forum, describes the public participation process, and highlights the EPA’s priorities for achieving clean water goals.

Prepared by the Department of City Planning of New York City, Vision 2020 is a comprehensive waterfront and waterway sustainability plan aimed at transforming the city's 520-mile shoreline with parks, industry, and housing, and capitalizing on its waterways to promote waterborne transportation, recreation, maritime activity, and natural habitats. This framework for the next decade is an outgrowth of Bloomberg's PlaNYC long-term sustainability blueprint issued in 2007. The plan establishes policies for the expanded use of NYC's waterways, or the “Blue Network,” for transportation, recreation, education, and for improving water quality.

This ClimateWise report provides climate change adaptation strategies that were developed by local leaders and experts in Fresno County, California, during a series of workshops in 2009-2010. Workshop participants considered both climate change impacts and local vulnerabilities while developing a suite of recommendations for increasing local resilience across sectors and communities. These recommendations are focused on socioeconomic systems including health and emergency preparedness, agriculture, and water resources and infrastructure, as well as species and ecosystems specifically within freshwater aquatic and riparian, woodlands and forests, and valley floor grasslands and semi-desert ecosystems.
