U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)

As the Nation's largest water, earth, and biological science and civilian mapping agency, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collects, monitors, analyzes, and provides scientific understanding about natural resource conditions, issues, and problems. The mission of the USGS is to serve the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and maintain our quality of life.

The USGS undertakes scientific research, monitoring, remote sensing, modeling, synthesis, and forecasting to address the effects of climate and land use change on the Nation’s resources. The resulting research and products are provided as the scientific foundation upon which policymakers, natural resource managers, and the public can make informed decisions about the management of natural resources.

The USGS Climate and Land Use Change Research Program supports fundamental scientific research on topics related to climate and land-cover change and their impacts. Priority research areas include the global carbon cycle, sea-level rise and coastal processes, global warmth, precipitation and drought, abrupt climate change, polar climate, glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets, sea ice, wetlands and permafrost, vegetation and ecosystems, feedback processes, climate change and ocean circulation, land-cover impacts, and natural climate variability.

In 2008, Congress created the National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center (NCCWSC) within the USGS to address challenges resulting from climate change and to provide natural resource managers with rigorous scientific information and effective tools for decision-making.  Located at the USGS National Headquarters in Reston, Virginia, the NCCWSC has invested over $20 million in climate change research and is now establishing eight regional Department of the Interior (DOI) Climate Science Centers (CSCs). NCCWSC is building cooperative partnerships with resource managers and scientists at Federal, State, tribal, local, academic, and nongovernmental (NGO) institutions and at national, regional and local scales.   More information about the NCCWCS and the CSCs can be found in this clearinghouse as separate entries.
